We were equally as divided back then, until December 7th 1941.

And when the shooting stopped, we went right back to being divided.

Remember Bill Mauldin? He was the creator of the Willie and Joe cartoons for Stars and Stripes...won a Pulitzer Prize for his work, while he was a soldier fighting in Europe...and went on to a long career as an editorial cartoonist for the Chicago Sun Times.

His second book, Back Home, is a gripping first-person account of the problems American GIs were facing as they tried to adjust to civilian life. Many of the same social and political challenges we argue about now -- the very same things -- divided American society in the late 1940s.

As Yogi Berra once said, it's deja vu all over again...

Hollywood did a lot for the cause during WWII. Hundreds of training films were produced and a high percentage of commercial films were really anti-enemy propaganda disguised as entertainment. Think of Casablanca. And many movie stars were active in USO shows and war bond drives.

Stars put on the uniform as well. Jimmy Stewart, Ronald Reagan, Clarke Gable come to mind.

Thank you. This was a great story to learn about.
Jimmy Stewart spent some time at Gowen Field in Boise Idaho.
This Youtube video is great.
