Has anyone had any experience with a holograph sight on a 500mag
I'm wanting something better than the iron sights but don't want to put a big scope on top of it?
This would be for hunting out to 100 yds.
Does anyone make one that would hold up to this kind of recoil punishment?

thanks:

I have a slide mounted J-Point on a 1911. I have only put about 100 rounds through it but it is holding up so far. I would think the 1911 slide banging at both ends of the stroke would be equal to or greater than the shock created by the 500.

Don't get a BSA holographic sight. My 629 destroyed it in less than 100 rounds of my less than factory power reloads.

You end up covering a lot of area at 100yds with most models, usually 3-5min dots. You would probably want to go with something like the EoTech(?) that they use on ARs'.

I'm planning on putting an Eotech on my .460 this fall. I contacted them with concerns about recoil. They told me that their products are rated for use on .50 cals. I figure that should be good enough.

I'd be more concerned with a holo sight on a 500 S&W than I would on a 50BMG rifle. Those rifles are usually huge, have big comps, and the recoil is often quite moderate. I imagine a quality holo like the Eotech might be able to hold up, but I think I'd try to clarify that with the company, make sure there was a warranty in place, and consider the fact that it will stand up to a BMG as promising, but not conclusive that it'll work on a 500.

FYI, here is the exact reply that I got from Eotech:

Hello,
Thank you for your inquiry…
All of our optics are not affected by heavy recoil. The test standard is repeated 50 cal mg rapid fire. Last week Sgt Ermy was on a show with an EOTech mounted on a rotating 1000 per min vehicle mtd machine gun.
Sincerely

Let us know how it works after a couple hundred rounds - I'll side with MTKTM, as a 500 Smith's recoil from chuckin' 440 grain slugs at 1,600fps is sharper than any 50 caliber BMG I've ever fired - that's an expensive item to experiment with - but if it holds up it would be a great sight.

I agree, the sharp, abrupt recoil of the revolver is the issue. I think it's the same reason why ILS problems are attributed to the 12 oz scandium .357s. EOTECHs are nice sights and not inexpensive. Wouldn't want to be left holding a piece of optical junk. 500s with heavy loads have a bad track record of doing nasty things to optics. Don

My EOTech is on a BFR 45-70 and hold up well. I have not tried one on my 500 Mag. But I know the Ultra-dot Match-dots will hold up.

You might check out Trijicon. They have some different reticle choices. I bought a Trijicon Reflex sight in 1998 because I destroyed a Tasco red dot on my Contender. I have used the Trijicon trouble free on a Dan Wesson .414 super mag., and on a S&W 500 shooting up to 500gr. bullets. Also the Trijicon doesn't require batteries. Good luck Vic
