Holster Critique

When I can find/make time I enjoy doing some leather crafting. I've made some belts, a guitar strap and rifle sling for friends, and one knife sheath for a co-worker. So seeing some of the threads on here of members making holsters got me wanting to try some. I'd like to know what you think and maybe some ideas/pointers from some of the other leather guys.
The first one I did from scratch and just made it my own design. I didn't have a holster for my M28s so I made this one to use when I go to the range. It's easy to just drop the gun in.
The second one I made for a friend and his M36 that he got for a carry gun.
The leather was basically scraps I had left over since i have not been to the leather shop in quite a while. I already know some things I would do different if I do any more but would like to hear from others.

Lookin good! I love the carving on the first one, and everything about the second one. How difficult is the carving? I'm dying to try it.

It's not that hard. The hardest part for me is using the swivel knife to cut the lines. I have a hard time making the lines smooth and flowing. I need more practice.

Could you recommend a good book on the subject? Were you self taught? I really like the looks of yours.

Good work. Your tooling looks like you've been into it longer than you make it sound. I've gotten great ideas from the "albums" on ths forum. There's some great close up pics. there.
Lately I've been dying the backround tooling black and selling those. It makes the tooling in relief jump right out at you. Again, good job.

My father was in the Air Force stationed in Wyoming. In 1951 he had rheumatic fever and spent a year in the hospital. While there he taught himself how to do this. He taught me what I know. I first started doing it when I was about 20 but there have been long stretches of in-activity.
There are books and also videos. Look on Youtube and you can see what's involved.

Nice work. The tooling is tasteful and well executed. The one thing I would want different on the 2 larger ones would be to still cover the trigger guard, but make a lot more space between the holster and grip of the gun. That would make it a lot easier to draw.
