I have a nice old victory model 38s&w with 5" barrel but having trouble finding a period-correct shoulder holster. All I see are for 4" barrels (which Mr. Jinks says were not common?). A few pictures show about 1/2" protruding from the bottom. If that's as good as it gets I will buy one. Any leads for a better fit please?

These were generally carried in canvas belt flap holsters (the 6" would stick out past the bottom of these), so if you want a shoulder holster a custom-made one to proper length may be your best option without the barrel going past the bottom.

The U. S. version of the Victory revolver (.38 Special) had a 4" barrel, so the U. S. shoulder holsters were made for that length. The vast majority of the British .38/200 Victory revolvers (.38 S&W) were made with 5" barrels, as yours has. I suppose there weren't very many shoulder holsters used by the British military, as I don't remember seeing one. That doesn't mean they don't exist. Many WWII British military revolver holsters were made of cloth webbing material, like canvas or duck.

I have never seen, nor do I believe there was a standard issue military shoulder holster for a 5 inch barreled Victory Model, by Britain or any of the colonial powers. If you want to carry the gun in a shoulder holster there are many different makers that offer a K frame shoulder holster that can hold a 5 in. gun very nicely. Ed.

If you mean Period Correct in the specific context of Commonwealth millitary issue during WWII era , no such critter.

If you mean Period Correct in the larger context of 5in long action K frames carried by civillians/ plainclothes LE in first half of 20th Century , that's a larger field. Many of the makers of period correct-ish CAS leather make shoulder holsters of "close enough" design , inquire as to their being able to adapt to a 5in KFrame.

The above mentioned A.E. Nelson Co makes several designs in continous production since the 192/30's.

Did the Brits use shoulder rigs? I have always seen photos of them with canvas belt holsters.

barrel hangout

Thanks all for your info. Picture shows what a 5" bbl would look like in a 4-1/2" holster. I just might go with that.
