Holster question for PPC

I've been thinking about getting involved in PPC and I have read the equipment section regarding holsters and basically it requires a "conventional" holster that covers the trigger guard. I typically wear a Yaqui slide type holster and just wanted to hear from the experienced folks on whether or not this is "legal." I'd also like to get a run down of gear used from all of you who have BTDT. Thanks!

It is legal, but not optimal. I guess it all depends on what you think ppc is about. The standard for ppc revolver holsters would be the Safariland 002, or similar, and the 013 for autos, or similar. Observing a ppc match would be advised, you will get a good idea of equipment needed.

Take your firearm and rig with you when you go to observe.
Where I shot PPC the folks were really friendly and helpful to new shooters.
You could probably even borrow a rig from someone to test with.
just make sure you don't try to use a behind the back or cross draw holster.
I saw the firing line get swept before, a cringe worth experience for sure.

Hi Brandon,
I shoot several guns when we have our matches. I have match leather for all of them. At times I won't want to be in and out of them or have to set a belt up for a different gun so I'll put on a big ol' Uncle Mikes nylon holster. It will take a 6" heavy bbl ppc revolver, 6" Para Super Hawg, 52-2 and 27-2. I don't feel at all handicapped by the cheap holster other than I don't look the part.
If I plan to shoot only one gun I will normally set up a belt and match holster but a guy can get by fine without race gear.

KAC, at this point I'm looking for something that challenges my accuracy skills. Honestly just looking for something different for additional trigger time. I took a look at that Safariland 013. Strange that this type of holster would be considered "conventional" by any police standards. What is the advantage of it over an open top holster? Could it be that much faster? But I'm interested to see it in action nonetheless.

Varmint, thanks for the info. As for small of back or cross draw holsters, I own neither, mostly due to their impracticality for almost any situation

Where in NM are you? The Albuquerque Shooting Range is home the the NRA Police Nationals and the NM PPC Association holds monthly matches there I believe. I believe there might also be some monthly matches at the Whittington Center near Raton and next week the NM State Championships and the Colorado State Championships are being held. Since the Nationals moved to ABQ the number of NM PPC shooters has been increasing, you will find PPC challenges your accuracy skills.

I'm about 2.5 hrs from Abq. I've done the TPC several times and every time I go I think about getting into PPC but for one reason or another just haven't done it. Hopefully that will change.

PPC shooters use the open front holsters to prevent wear on the front sight, not for speed. Speed has very little to do with PPC. Many, if not all, PPC competitors use sight black of some sort on their sights. A conventional holster will rub off the sight black and cause sighting problems.
Go to a couple matches, talk to the competitors, and you will receive lots of great information.

I didn't think speed from the holster would make that much of a difference after seeing some of the stage times. That makes sense, thanks KAC.

Many of the revolvers in use for PPC have Aristocrat or Wichita sight ribs that will not fit in most holsters. If shooting a stock gun or a gun that fits your holster and is safe, just about any holster that covers the trigger will suffice.
