I've been having an EXTREMELY hard time setting up a VPN into my Linux server. I've tried three different VPN packages and have been unable to get any of them to work. I've done this on other people's systems, but can't on mine and suspect that the issue is the older D-Link router I'm using that I got for free from a former employer.

Does anyone have a recommendation? It MUST work well for VPN passthrough, and I'm not willing to use a third party solution, so don't bother suggesting GoToMyPC or anything like it. I need to be able to set up a real self-managed VPN.

Get a Cisco ASA5505 Firewall and terminate the VPN connection into it behind your existing router. You can then use the Cisco VPN client software to connect to the ASA remotely.

Heck, that's what I came to say. My Porter Cable router is pure perfection and it came with both a fixed and a plunge base.

That's definitely the easy way to do it, and the way I'm accustomed to, using SonicWall products. I suspect it's also out of my price range, without having checked.

I was going to suggest a Cisco 7609 router but that was just a smart-alec thought. Try E-bay for a Cisco 887 or 877 and run the F/W version. It'll do VPN in software and you can use OpenVPN client.

I just installed the Cisco Valet Pro - super easy, good range and fast. I have 2 iMac's and a net book running thru it.
