Thought this picture of patrolmen at inspection showed a nice variety of revolvers. Looks to be some M&Ps, Combat Masterpieces and one with a shrouded ejector rod (Highway Patrolman or Combat Magnum?). Would be interesting to know if these were department supplied or individual purchases.

I grew up on windward Oahu in a community called Kaaawa. I
remember in the early 1960's our elementary school would
have canoe races as part of an annual fair. There was a Japanese
Honolulu Police officer named Mori who used his S&W service revolver as a starter gun to start the canoe races. Those
were the days!

I have one gun that shipped to Hawaii, a 44 Target Model of 1950. I doubt it had any LE connection as it was shipped to Honolulu Sporting Goods Co. on April 20, 1954. They had some nice guns in that order.

3 6 1/2" 44 Targets
7 4" HD's
12 K38 Masterpieces, w/ TH
5 22 Combat Masterpiece

Total charge for all 27 guns was $1361.86. Try buying just one of those 44 targets for that these days.

The 44 is one of my favorite revolvers. BTW, it has the post war "satin" blue finish, not bright blue.

In that time period large departments issued the service revolvers and smaller departments required the officer to furnish their own service revolver. However this was not a hard fast rule. HPD could have issued the service revolver but officers could have been allowed to furnish their own.
