I was loading .38 specials tonight, and learned a new maintenance tip. Probably obvious to the experienced folk, but new to me...

I was having problems with the primer slide getting hung up and not fully returning with a new primer for seating. I use Hornady lead bullets, which have a dry crumbly lube that gets all over and into the primer slide. I took the primer system apart, cleaned it out, and was still having problems.

I finally noticed that the primer punch was sticking up a little. Turns out there was gunk built up on the inside the primer punch, preventing it from sitting flush. I cleaned it out, and that fixed the problem.

I haven't seen this tip anywhere, so thought I would share.

I have found the same thing that is sludge, I have, I am ashamed to admit, let the primers run out. When that happens you get a powder spill. I think the sludge is a combination of powder and lubricant.
I clean the punch and slide then use wax lube on them.

Since I can't walk and chew gum at the same time, I still prime on a Lee Auto Prime. :(

I guess that means I only have to expand the case mouth, throw the powder, let the RCBS Lockout Die do its thing and seat the bullets.

The KISS principle (Keep It Simple Sergeant) works for me. ;)
