I have been having trouble with my hot water heater. Pilot would not stay on. I replaced the thermocouple and cleaned the air intake today and it still won't work. Any suggestions short of a new unit? At this point it is beginning to look like a great field target.

Mine does that occasionally. It seems that in my attic (stupid place to put it but that is Houston), occasionally I get wind up there that blows out the pilot. I have minimized the problem by creating wind baffles around the air intake out of steel.

No need to heat hot water anyway.

Check that a lump of slag hasn't found it's way into the orfice of the pilot light. You may be experiencing an issue with the gas control valve. Is the unit new enough to have a flue ventilating fan, pre- burner lighting? Sometimes the draft produced by them, can cause the pilot to be drafted out when the control valve opens sluggishly. Good Luck!
(They make a great target BTW!)

Yes Clean pilot assembly!
How old is the water heater?
if it's 10, Get a new one now before you have a leak!

My dad, a retired master chief, would always take me to task every time I said "hot water heater". Son, he would boom, its a water heater, if the waters already hot it doesn't need heating". (o;

Thanks for all the replies , no more please as I have found that the problem is once more a case of corporate greed. It seems that Whirlpool in a deal with Lowe's produced my particular model as an exclusive. The model which sold from 2000-2005 has a design flaw in the control box, but Whirlpool would not issue a recall. They also had a thermocouple that was exclusive to this unit with a left hand thread. Whirlpool would supply replacement parts but the owner would get stuck with the plumber's bill for the original parts only. Since this is the second time that it happened to me I would have to eat all of the expenses. So buyer beware. I'll give this company a wide birth and , of course, tomorrow I won't be buying a Whirlpool.
