House cat fends off 3 coyote attack

Unfortunately; we lose a lot of domestic pets to Coyotes and Bobcats as well here every year. Even letting a pet out into an enclosed back year(6' walls required if you have a pool) is no guarantee as I've seen Coyotes clear one of these with a single jump from a standstill. As an aside: The Bobcat population here has really increased as we see them in residential neighbors all the time anymore.

We had a 16 pound yeller cat for about 17 years. No fat, all muscle. He had large paws, like a bobcat.

He was fearless. He attacked any dog that came anywhere near the house. He would just sit and wait for the dog to come at him. Cool character.

Then, it was slice and dice. The dog would yell, running for his life with Jellicle in hot pursuit.

Wifey ran over him when he was ten or so. Bleeding from both ends, Vet said if he lived through the night, he would survive. He did.

I'm not a cat guy, but I miss him. He followed me around the yard just like a faithful dog.

Chicago had 3 Coyote attacks on humans this past week. One was a 5yr old kid bitten several times on the face and head. Another was a jogger who was bit on the butt. Another jogger was chased, not damaged. So they put all the police officers in the districts involved on the case. One Coyote was caught and is being treated for his injuries. A second Coyote suspect remains at large.
Get this! They are running DNA tests on the incarcerated Coyote to see if he's responsible for bites on kid and jogger. The victims will need rabies shots anyway since the DNA results will take weeks. Meanwhile rape kits taken from victims take years before they're processed thru DNA.
Get this 2! Apparently Coyotes are a protected species in Illinois. Coyotes were turned loose in the city long ago for rodent control. Chicago still has the largest rat problem of ANY U.S. city.

Oh my, released in the city years ago? Who told you that, and really, you repeat it to others?

That is such bad information and so obvious.

Currently sitting on the back of the couch as I type this is "Wild Thang!!!" Ms. WT is a feral rescue, picked up at the local prison when she was abandoned by either mother or prisoner. My wife brought her home in the pocket of her lab coat. First thing she did was make a beeline for our dog ... Molly, who was asleep. Latched onto a nipple ... no results. Head butt, still no results. Tried another nipple. Same result. Molly looked around, started washing WT. WT curled up w/ Molly and went to sleep.

She is now four years old ... and weighs 14.5 pounds. Hard as a brick. BIG feet. BIG mouth. Just as mean as a snake. Vicious!!! No matter what it is ... crawling or walking ... fearless! Deadly on anything up to and including dogs. So far, none have ever been willing to stay near her. She doesn't fight fair. If caught out in a open place, she'd be at a disadvantage, especially against a pack. One on one, in a area where she can use obstacles to her advantage, she is supremely capable. She is my dark of night protector! Sleeps on the pillow just above my head. Sincerely. bruce.

Oh yes! I guess I'm really stupid, but I thought if you caught one and didn't shoot it, but instead installed a tracking collar on it and released it back in the city it's moronic to say the least. I'll bet the tracked Coyotes aren't practicing safe "sex in the city."

The city wants to enlist the help of coyotes to fight off rats

Thousands of coyotes live in the Chicago area. But attacks on people, like the one that left a young boy injured, are extremely rare. - Chicago Tribune

My cat Toby is 13lbs of muscle, He plops his butt down in the middle of the sidewalk in front of the house and won't let dogs by. There's not a dog around here that doesn't give him a wide birth, including my own.
Only time I've seen him back down was from a mountain lion in the alley behind the house, never saw him move so fast, and put me and the dog between him and the lion.

Now we have “meaner than a prison cat!”

Must say ... when my wife first brought her home as a little itty bitty kitty ... I thought to call her "PC" ... Prison Cat!!! But, once she started growing and once her inner nature began to show forth ... it was "Wild Thang!!!" My wife insist on calling her "Smokey." What does she know? She has never been standing in the kitchen eating a bowl of cereal for breakfast and suddenly had a 14.5 pound cat jump up on her neck and shoulder!!! Dog gone cat is a real jumper! Sincerely. bruce.

That cat knew what the stakes were. Tip o' the hat to a brave cat!
