How about a .500 Magnum thread -- All models Pros & Cons!

I have a PC 460 and would like to get a 500, well, just because is why, and I want to know how one can get one without the comp. I see the John Ross special is still available but can a 500 be had without the compensator or hearing loss accelator as I refer to them?

JR specials are the only ones w/o comps if I'm not mistaken. Just use high NRR earplugs and earmuffs and you're good to go. Don

Hi I was curious what kind of scope rings did you use on your stealth hunter w/leupold 2x.....I'm trying to find out if warne rings will fit a 2x leupold on my new 629pc light hunter Thanks

I have the 500 and 460 with the 8" Barrels. Both are very fun to shoot. Recoil is not that bad depending on the type of round being fired. I get the assortment paks from Ballistic supply. The 700 grainers are a handful let me tell you.

Also the 2 3/4" Bear Protection .500 snubby they made has no comp, but that may be shorter than you want...

Your Son-in-Law has an excellent revolver in that JR model. He will probably find the recoil to be very harsh when shooting full-on loads compared to the compensated models.

If he has any problems with accuracy have him check the cylinder throats - I know mine & one other individual on this board had tight cylinder throats and after sending them off to a pistolsmith for reaming, they shoot very well now. I went to 0.501 while the other member went to 0.502. 0.502 is probably the better choice if shooting cast bullets.

My JR Model just went down this week and I'm awaiting a S&W return ticket, so I can send it back to them for repair.

I own John Ross 5" 500 serial number 22 and am curious as to the repairs you refered to? Mine had to have the extractor star and a few others replace by S&W a few months back. I won't comment on recoil because this is the only 500 I've shot but, I never consider it harsh with the John Ross 500? I will say this and I've spoken to John about it as well, the photos on Gun Blast with Leroy Thompson shooting it have to be posed. Recoil is more straight back than up in the air? I and everyone who's shot this gun has a minute amount of rubber from the grips in the web of our hands after shooting it! Currently loading 500 grain bullet with 93% meplat over the bottom load of Titegroup and find this very managable and controlable. Will make a good whitetail deer(or whatever) load.

Hello, whats the ring height on your warne maxima rings, I have a 629pc and want to put a leupold on it, everybody tells me i need medium height, is that what you're using on your 500 pictured here.

Actually, I never have a noise problem with my JRC 500? I wear ear protection with every pistol I own, even .22 LRs.

Sorry for the late reply. I sent the revolver in for repair as the cylinder and barrel were making contact, not allowing the cylinder to rotate. Had nothing to do with carbon buildup, as it would lockup on the bench after a good cleaning. SW advised they repaired the barrel – never could talk to anyone that could explain exactly how they repaired the barrel, as it doesn't make sense to me. Any thoughts on that JR?

7P's,
I beleive they refaced the breech of the barrel when they fixed the endshake. If you look outside of the focing cone closer, you should probably notice the section where used to be right under the topstrap as the burnt mark here is somewhat liter than the rest. Means, they turned the barrel for the adjustment.
