Was at small gun shop enjoying a cup of coffee and old man conversations when a young gal and her brother came into shop offering to sell a shot gun. Anyway, I bot a 20 ga. 3" over/under Beretta Onyx for under $500. Excellent condition. I will shoot it a couple times tomorrow, clean it, and then take it to local show this coming weekend.

You got a bargain. Probably make some money on it. I bought a new Beretta 12 ga over/under with 26" barrels and choke tubes some years ago for skeet shooting. Don't remember the exact model now. But...I got interested in Trap shooting so I traded it in on a Browning single barrel Trap gun. I have always believed the Beretta over/unders were better guns than the popular Browning Citori.

Beretta makes a good shotgun with chrome lined bores. I agree with the statement that the Beretta is better than the Citori. I have fired a few Citoris and a couple have had point of impact issues, and IMO they all have a less than desirable trigger, and they cost too much for what they are.

Nice grab on the Beretta OP

Sad story, the couple probably sold (grand)dad's prized Beretta shotgun to buy Pokemon trading cards. Hope you like it enough to keep it.
As long as they didn't steal it, I'm glad that it (hopefully) will go to someone who will appreciate it. For all we know, they are going to spend the money on their educations or some other worthy cause. Why be a pessimist?

I had the same gun in 12 gauge probably 20 or more years ago. I believe that I paid 5 or 6 hundred for it NIB then, so you got an excellent deal!! I agree with others that the Beretta is better than the Browning. And in my opinion, the Citori has always been overpriced. An old gunsmith told me back then that the Beretta locked up better and would do so for many years. Enjoy it in good health.

I would keep it .

I've done way too many foolish things in my life than to let that Sweet O/U get away from me .
If there is any better shotgun ... us mere mortals can't afford them .

I hope you are correct but I have also seen human nature up close and personal.

careful, you may like it.

Had a good relationship with an FFL dealer. Shootin bull in his office one day, look over and see a sharp looking shotgun propped against the wall. How much for that- pointing at the shotgun...$450, really? hmmm, okay. (thought it was going to be much more). After we're done chatting, get up, count out his money, & grab the gun. You want the box? Hhhmmm ya, that'll be nice. Anyway, no clue, but he was always surprising me with little treats. Go home for the fun part, what did he just sell me? Beretta Gold Mallard Al 390 (20ga). Took it with me next time to range...shot great, loved it...I had no idea.

I had a 686 Silver Pidgin, 28" 28 gauge in the late 90's. Great little gun! My brother has 4 or 5. The 686 design is better than the Citori (I have 9 of those!) It is not a better design than the Browning Superpose! (I have 2 of those.)

The two models of Beretta O/U that I've shot (but not owned) that are better than the ORYX /686 series are ASE and the SO (Sidelock, Over/Under). Those guns are almost self-guided and very lively! The most famous of the SO series was Ernest Hemingway's SO2 in 20 gauge. I had the chance, but not the money to buy it! They wanted about 4 times normal for better condition gun! "But it was "Papa's!"

I have a Beretta Onyx 686 over & under in 12 gauge, and a Beretta AL 391 Urika 12 gauge that I bought my wife for trap shooting.
Both are excellent guns.
The Onyx 686 was purchased by a guy for his wife and had the butt stock cut down for her. She shot it once, didn't like it, and they sold it back to the dealer. I got it and had an adjustable extension put on the butt stock, for adjusting length of pull and cast.
Dealer gave me a very good deal on it too.

I hunted with various Beretta and Browning over and unders over the years. In general, I'd put them on the same level provided you're talking the same price points. I have seen more Beretta's snap (fail to set the primer off) on the trap and skeet ranges than I have Brownings, but I'd feel comfortable buying either brand.

It did well with me when I was shooting a lot of trap & Clays games.

I only had trouble shooting at night under the lights with this O/U.
With the "Cool" nights in Nevada, I wore Golf gloves at the club meets
and could not "Feel" the side to side selector , and would miss a shot
now and then with it in the wrong position.
It was a "Used" shotgun that had a lot of use, that made the selector very easy to move.

Accurate, great fit and scroll work, I still miss it.
