how accurate out of the box?

just got my new 15-22 last week and haven't had a chance to shoot yet. i'm mounting a leupold gilmore red dot optic but i'm waiting for my tapco fusion riser to bring the scope higher so i can use the irons as a backup through the scope. eventually i'll be taking the factory irons off and putting on some magpul back up irons, but for now i'm planning on lining up my red dot with the factory front sight post before i go to the range. are the iron sights on target from the factory?

For me they were slightly low right. It took 5 minutes (maybe) to adjust them to get 6 of 6 in the 6 cm circle at 25 meters.

Mine was low & right from the factory also. One range session and about 25 rounds put me in the X ring at 50 feet with factory irons.

I have since put a M3 red dot clone on it from Primary Arms and am seeing similiar results from it. If I do my part the 15-22 shoots to .5" at 50' for me. I don't have access to a longer range at this time.

Mine was low and left. Used a cheap laser boresight tool and two minutes later it was dead on! They really come in handy!

Mine was right on. No adjustment at all. Unbelievable for iron sights. They stay on target even after taking them off a few times and putting them back on. This is one awsome fun rifle.

The 12 gauge that is end on is missing the primer, because I shot it out. The other shells are 44 Magnum. I went from one to the other, bang hit, bang, hit, Etc. Oh yeah, 40 yards. This rifle does a pretty darn good job with a 3-9X50.

I shot 200 on the iron sights right out of the box and it was dead on I was very impressed quality rifle thanks smith and wesson

I have one of those composite Tapco risers. Fits the rifle well. 3/4 rise is perfect for co-witnessing with factory sights in the lower third of a 40mm tube red dot with low profile rings/built in mounts.

The factory sights were reasonably set, IMO. I don't think you'll have much problem zeroing in your red dot from a start point of factory sight settings.

Accuracy "out of the box with iron sights" is pretty vague. My rifle was a couple of inches low at seven yards but it only took a click or so of the front sight at 25 and again at 50 yards to put me right on target.

"Iron sight accuracy" has little to do with the rifle but is highly dependent on the shooter.

I'm still surprised with how few folks know how to shoot the M16-system despite 50 years of service.

The key is a consistent stock weld so your eye is in the same position relative to the sights every time. The best and easiest way to achieve this is to put your nose right against the charging handle. That tiny small aperture opens up nicely at this distance.

Grainy picture, but you can see how close your nose should be. I touch my nose to the handle. Seems strange, even bizarre, but works very well. Shorten the telestock one click (two if wearing a coat).

Once you're zeroed (front sight for elevation, rear for windage) you can mount your red dot sight and with the proper "co-witness" mount just move the dot to the tip of the front sight while looking thru the irons.

Here's the Tasco sight and riser I had in my parts box for several years. Co-witnesses very well. Yeah, it's clunky looking! The rifle doesn't care.

I think the guy was simply asking if the factory sight settings were typically in the ballpark (since he had yet to shoot the rifle) for a starting point on his red dot.

One of the reasons I use a 40mm red dot is so I don't have to mash my face into the stock and blow snot on the charging handle.

thanks chattanoogaphil, that is exactly what i was asking. assuming the accuracy out of the box was close, i was going to align my red dot with the front sight post. if the accuracy report was poor, i wouldn't bother mounting an optic until i sighted in the irons. now if my leupold gilmore wasn't such a piece of crap i'd be done but it does suck so now i need to go get a new optic. darn, more goodies to buy for this baby black rifle....

I don't know anything about LG red dots, so I did a Google and read feedback from users that was on par with your assessment. I've had good luck with the cheap red dot brands like BSA and Sightmark mounted on .22LR, and my older Tasco ppd models have been 'bullet proof'... so to speak.

If I was looking to purchase another cheap red dot I'd try a NcStar. They have a bunch of red dot models with 3MOA dots. 3MOA is pretty hard to find among the inexpensive lines. At the next gun show in my area I'm going to take a look at em.

I'm a little confused. Are you asking if the rifle is accurate out of the box? Or are you asking if the sights are zero'd out of the box?

If you are asking about accuracy, that's a subjective term. For me the accuracy is a little disappointing, but acceptable.

If your asking about whether or not it's zero'd from the factory, no. And even if it was, assume it isn't.

My M&P 15-22 was nicely mechanically zeroed out of the box. S&W ain't spending any time zeroing these at the factory, though!
