How do cops or full carry folks do this?

Went to the range today with my son (other posts under M&P) and had to use the restroom. I got a range kit for Christmas and had my holster and double mag pouch. Kind of an embarrassing topic but how the heck do you guys go to the bathroom while carrying a full size!?

I usually carry a j frame in a front pocket holster so it is not a big deal.

It was a challenge to use the bathroom when your belt has all this gear on it. I can't imagine adding flashlights, a taser, cuffs let alone just the gun and two mags.

Also when driving around with the gun on my belt one thing I noticed was that it pinched - man I got to get rid of my spare tire and slim down.

I can use that pocket holster all day but first time carrying a full size on a belt was uncomfortable. Guess it gives me a reason to lose weight!

I keep a mental list of all the bathrooms in Manhattan that have nice, big hooks behind the door. Some of the more considerate commands even put one of those little snack tables in the stall to put your gear on. Worst case senario is have your partner wait outside and hold your belt for you.

I wear a high quality holster, belt & cartridge carrier and carry a 2" M60 so it's very comfortable. I find carrying full sized Autos and spare Magazine a bit less comfortable than a revolver however still not too bad with the Kramer Horsehide belt & holster combo. Some of it of course is just break in of the leather and getting used to the extra weight & bulk.

A full duty rig hurts. Period. Mine weighed 12 pounds, all up. If a sit-down is required, you go back on post, or another safe place, like a fire house, and take your duty belt off. Hang it from the hook on the partition door. Remove weapon. Now, you have two reasonable choices: place it on the TP dispenser, if it fits and won't slide, or, drop trou, assume the seated position and carefully place said firearm in the crotch of your trou, which are now around your ankles. Pay special attention to the direction of the muzzle of the weapon. Upon completion of deposit and associated procedures, reverse process.
Insert weapon back in duty belt and secure, then put duty rig back on.
If wearing weapon and mag and cuff pouch only, I recommend the gun in the dropped trou crotch myself. See above for cautionary statement. If doing the TP holder weapon retention method, don't forget the weapon when you exit the stall.
If you leave your weapon in the holster of your duty rig and hang it from the coat hook, I double-damned guarantee somebidy will come by, reach over the partition and make off with your whole belt, weapon included. Cops are famous for doing this to each other.
Do not do the toilet tank top as a shelf method, for it is damp, slick, and you might forget your weapon. In my years as a watch commander, more times than a few I was presented with a weapon somebody left in the crapper. I always found it highly amusing when somebody shame-facedly appeared before my desk admitting he left his weapon in the crapper.
Thus endeth the long-winded, but trulu complete answer to your question.

Off Duty:
1. quality holster
2. quality belt to match holster
3.wear holster in comfortable position to your body size.

On Duty:
1. Use handicap stall
2. Duty belt minus weapon on wall hook or fold down table
3. place weapon in crotch on pants
4. keep potable radio within reach because if you have a dispatch call at all during your shift, it will come with you are seated on the toilet.

there is a guy at work that completely unbukles his pants to stand at the urinal...i can't imagine what that would be like with all the stuff on a belt...

I think the OP is missing the fact that the Duty belt is not threaded through the belt loops on the pants. More like taking off a tool belt before you drop your pants.

Wearing a gun belt all day long gets old quickly, and you soon learn what you do or don't really need to carry full time. My stick rode in the front seat of the car and was only attached to duty belt as needed. Day shift I carried a Mini Maglight. Night shifts it was the "phone Pole" five D cell Maglight.

As for "personal" breaks, I took off my duty belt and hung it on the coat hook in the stall. When ever possible I used the facilities at one of the Fire Stations.

I never really ran into any significant issues when dropping the kids off at the pool.
In the worst cases, I've had to transfer my sidearm from the holster to an inside jacket pocket .. but thats about it

When I was ccw my redhawks with the 5 1/2" & 7 1/2" it was the shoulder holster 24/7. The bathroom visits were easy. Now with the in the pants belt holster I remove the gun and holster. I never found a gun and holster to be uncomfortable in the car or truck. My back is probably bad today for ccw the heavy iron for decades. My next shoulder holster will be for the n frames with a 4" barrel. Once we commit to ccw carry its like our wallet it has to be on us at all times. I feel naked without it.

Jogging your memory. In the old cop shop Barney Miller, Fish (the old cop who took many bathroom breaks) carried his piece in a shoulder holster.) Made it much easier in a drop-trou situation.:o

When I worked night alone at my buddies gas station I carried a full sized .45 auto and I found it was the best way to carry a heavy gun and also to hit the bathroom. Just unhook the belt strap and your paints were free to do whatever you had to do. Also working on cars on the lift when you were wearing a jacket and raised your hands up high that would expose your belt level and show your secret.

With the shoulder rig you only got a little look at the bottom of the leather, and most people did not relate that to a gun. I have 4 decades of CCW and for the most part I now use an IWBH and just carefully lower everything to whatever position pants and holster need.

It was well known in my area years back that a detective left his gun in a bathroom. (Gun had departments name on it!)

He had a belt carry and took the gun out as he said he did not want it hitting the floor. He got lucky a responsible person found it and had a ranking brother on the force who figured out who it was and told his brother to “Take a report at the gas station”:D

At local PD back in the dark ages. An officer hit the station for an emergency sig. 53. The room was in the front hall close to the service desk. The door slammed the lid dropped and they heard a gun shot and a scream. He dropped his pants and his 1911 about the same time. He hit the back wall because the john was blown away. He does not like to talk about it.

4. keep potable radio within reach because if you have a dispatch call at all during your shift, it will come with you are seated on the toilet.

I used to swear that our dispatchers had some sort of special sensors that would tell them if I was eating or sitting on the toilet. It never seemed to fail.

As to the original question, I carry a 3913TSW in an IWB holster, but not ammo carrier. I put the firearm on the toilet paper dispenser of it's large enough. If it's too small, I improvise.

I like the suggestion of using a handicap stall if there is one. I'll have to keep that in mind.
