....before it kills me....??? I need some suggestions other than what I'm already doing---Vit. C, and Alkaseltzer plus cold,--What are some of your remedies for this Vile Beast known as the common cold?? I need answers before I use one of my beloved Smiths for one last time!!--(kidding). 80 degrees here in Alaska and I get a cold from my back Doc. Wait 'til I see him this week..., The dirty no-good @&$%^ :). Thanks in advance for any suggestions (including a good choice for ammo!!! LOL) for a cure or relief.............Spre----sneeze----fix

Sneezefix, my cure for the cold:
- Robitussin to loosen up the sinuses
- lots and lots of clear fluids (OJ, ginger ale, sprite, water, tea, whiskey)
- advil or tylenol for the aches
- REST

Rent a few movies and lounge on the couch for a day or two. You'll feel better in no time!

For a sore throat and stuffed up nose get Fisherman's Friend lozenges. The taste kind of bad but they work good.

As far as I know, there is no cure for the common cold but time. When I have a cold, I do what others have recommended (and what my doctor recommends):

1. Rest
2. Drink plenty of fluids...more than usual, and not sodas or alcohol, but water, juice, coffee, tea, etc. (Switch to decaf in the evening.) Be sure to eat, even though you might not feel like it...your body still needs nourishment.
3. I take NyQuil at night, and during the day I use OTC cold/cough/congestion relief meds. I also use nose spray and throat lozenges. I've found that generics work just as well as name brands.

While #3 might help ease the discomfort, the first two are the most important things you can do.

Microwave some Merlot, or other red wine and inhale the fumes. Taken in massive doses, I've found this to be quite effective in clearing up the sinuses. And after a while, everything just sort of mellows-out. -S2

Stay in bed. Sleep. Rest is the best thing as other's have said. Speaking from experience if you keep on working and pushing your body you'll end up with something worse. I fought a cold for 3 months. I was working nights 72 hrs a week and wouldn't call in sick. 1st it was a cold. Then the flu. Then bronchitis, and finally pneumonia. The pneumonia almost did me in.

Only thing you can do is manage the symptoms until cold runs its' course. I always take an Allegra if I have to work. Enough pseudoephedrine to power through the most demanding work day. Otherwise, stay home, lots of liquids (nonalcoholic) and put your feet up. Joe

Sleep, follwed by more sleep. Then some sleep. If you are reading this, you are not sleeping.

A cold is a virus . No two are alike , therefore you can't produce a cure for the " common cold " Treat the symptoms and get some rest .
It'll run it's course .

I felt like that a few weeks ago. I called the Dr. and he said Z-Pac. Worked good. In a week it was gone.

Z-pak for a cold?!!! That doc should be horsewhipped. Antibiotics, especially an elephant gun fluoroquinolone like Z pak should be reserved for extreme bacterial infections. No cure exists for any virus. If we could crack one we could cure them all. I spent 8 wonderful years in the pharma industry and curing any virus IS the holy grail. Not enough zeros to put next to a number of profits that would ensue. .02 Joe

Cure for cold

Ibuprofen or Tylenol for the aches and pains...if nasal or chest congestion Mucinex or Mucinex-D...if cough Mucinex-DM or Robitussin-DM...there is no cure...all you can do is treat symptoms...If you have a good pharmacist, they should be able to recommend something after you tell them your symptoms ...my old pharmacy professor used to say if you have a cold and take medication you will get better in a week...if you have a cold and do not take any medication you will get better in 7 days...sometimes it just has to take it's course...talk to your pharmacist...

Thanks for the suggestions and I had a handle on it 'til I felt good and skipped two doses..........Dag-nabbit sun uv a bliskit anyway.........back on the nyquil, vit C Blk velvet coffee, and honey,,,,,,,,and her too. She's not one to be put-off by a cold..............dernit!! For the luv of rest.......Bottoms up(the whiskey).....:)

It's been about 3 1/2 years since the last time I was sick just try and stay away from germs and sick people. Keep your surroundings clean use an air purifier/cleaner, wash your hands and eat right.

I heard that Vitamin C is good for you before you get the cold but it has no effect on your cold itself.

If you're going the Nyquil route (and I always do), make sure you get the original recipe. The new one on the shelf isn't nearly as good. Ask the pharmacist for the original one he keeps behind the counter.

I rarely catch a cold and am rarely sick. The last time I caught a cold was because I had traveled by car to Florida (hotels, restaurants) and then was on a cruise ship for 5 days). Prior to that, it's been at least 5 years.

I guess mine was "bacterial". It was still gone in a week.
