How Do I Safely Remove a Bullet From a Live Cartridge?

I read more than one report over the years about cartridges going off and spontaneously disassembling kinetic bullet puller pullers, so I no longer use one.

Could you please post any links to the information about dangers in using kinetic bullet pullers? I am very curious about the authors and what information is claimed?

Yeah that seems odd to me - unless someone did something stupid - for example - striking the wrong end of the unit onto a surface where the primer came into contact with something that acted as a firing pin.

Or continuing to strike the unit onto a surface after the round had come apart somehow causing a spark that ignited the powder.

I've only had one....

I've only had one primer go off and that was while using a Lee Hand Load where you tap the primer into place. It was........surprising. I've never had anything like that happen when I wasn't messing directly with the primer.

I've heard the wives tales about kinetic bullet pullers, too. Funny how these urban legends become near fact. Personally, I have less fear of them than I do of the hand loads of the guy next to be at the range. Kinetic pullers, like everything else, work just fine when used as intended.

It has been known to happen when people use a shell holder from a press instead of the collet that belongs in the inertia puller. Certain calibers can hit the primer. A really dumb thing to do but I suppose some who have done it lost the collet and just thought it easier to use a shell holder.
Stu

This is my understanding also from what I have read. Using a case holder is not a good thing to use.

Lots and Lots of people have pulled millions of bullets with kinetic pullers with no problems.

How can this be? This means that thousands of reloaders have made millions of mistakes. Reloaders are perfectionists that constantly check their work and worry about details  .

I just can't help myself this morning.

Did you check the throats with your calipers before ordering
your gages?

Yes but got what I feel to be inaccurate readings as the caliper's inside measurement blade edges are not razor sharp. The edges are flat, probably about .01" across. I was getting .44x readings.

Wow. Talk about a firestorm.

I never said it was common, just common enough that I choose not to use a kinetic puller.

Two minutes with Google. The 24hourcampfire post has some nationally known authors posting.

Kinetic Bullets Puller = KB. Possible? - 24hourcampfire
Many times when people screw up and do something wrong, they just can't face the fact that they were at fault. It is a poor workman who blames his tools.

And it is also possible to shoot your eye out with a Ranger Red Ryder BB Gun. Nothing is risk free in life.

But aside from all this negative-nancy chatter about cartridges firing, the kinetic puller (I use a $20 RCBS one) is a great way to disassemble a few boo-boos. Notice I said "a few". If you are going to break down a couple hundred rounds you'd probably like a bullet-pulling die much better.

I just used my kinetic puller to take apart a heavily crimped, (but powderless), 45-70 cartridge - took about 5 whacks but it worked.

So lets do the math. Some Bozo used a shellholder in place of the correct collet and one lets sy two people did this and posted it on the internet.

Compare that to how many brands of kinetic pullers there are and how many millions of rounds have been broken down and the conclusion is they are not safe.

A Father let his 5 year old mow the lawn with a self propelled lawn mower. Father had defeated the engine stop feature. The child was mowing on a hill with no shoes on. He tripped or something, mower rolled over his foot and cut of his toes or foot. Father sued the company and actually won as it was a "unsafe" mower.

First off I have no reloading gear. I would like to remove a 250 gr. LRN from a live Remington Target cartridge and a 255 gr. hard cast Keith from a live Buffalo Bore cartridge. I need the bullets to test the cylinder throat diameters of a S&W 25-5 which is notorious for oversized throats. I would need to remove the bullets without affecting the diameter of the bases. Any suggestions?

Thanks.
I just got and used a Frankford Arsenal puller and it works great, for 16.00 on Ebay it saved me from scrapping 50 rounds of short loaded 40 cal rounds, and a few with primers that didn't fire.

Great Post.

I have used the "green hammer" hundreds of times, always using the 3 piece collet and rubber band system without issue. I never thought about using the shell holder and now see how it can be an issue.

Ok. I received my plug gauges, .452 fits snugly in each throat, .453 doesn't fit in any of them. Guess I got a pinned bbl winner!
