How do you guys afford our gun habit?

All the money I would have spent on diapers, I was able to spend on more interesting items. Married 21 years - no kids. That's how I afford...

I do understand what you are saying DesertFox. I as well were never blessed with my own children. But twenty five years ago, I married a beautiful lady with two young girls 7-9. Now I have 3 grandchildren that are worth more than gold and silver. They are my best friends, and I can now enjoy all the Smiths I want with the blessings of grandchildren. What else can a man ask for. The Moral of this story.....forget the children, go straight to grandchildren. :)

I did the same thing KDailey, except we just had our first grandson!!!

Work all I can, which is really too much.

I only buy the guns I really like, even if I am looking to sell them, that way I am never in a hurry to sell.

Two safes packed full!!! Really need two more!

I tell myself that they are my retirement $$$. I will sell a few off. That is a lie, I have a really difficult time selling one.

And when you tire of what you have, do not sell it. Simply put it in the back of the safe. Your interest will probably return to it in the future.

Oh yes, hand load so you can afford to shoot your weaponry.

"Life is too short to shoot a ugly (crappy) weapon!"

I shoot a lot of rimfire and clays. I don't burn through as many target loads as I would 9mm.

Like all good vices, the first step is to hide it from the wife. Get the biggest safe you can right from day one and always tell her it's near empty. NEVER tell her how many guns you have. A back door to slip them helps too.

Right now i own a Taurus 740 SS Slim and i'm on the list for two Shields.I'm kinda growing impatient and i'm thinking of purchasing a 9c for myself( thanks to Buds Police Supply) instead of a Shield and leave the 9 Shield for my wife. She likes the feel of my 740( she has small hands), but she doesn't like the kick of the .40.I'm really getting the gun bug with getting two more pistols and a shotgun for hd.How do you guys continue to afford not only the gun purchases but the ammo to go along with it.

Well it all depends on where you are at in your life in terms of family obligations, job success, ETC but it all boils down to what is fair for you and your family. In my opinion guns should never be a priority over the family needs and then balancing that to be fair with the family.

I bought most of my guns later in life as my kids were grown and gone and I always made sure the wife got and equal amount of what her wants were so it was all fair. After she died then it was just what do I want and can I afford it for the first time in my life.

In the end they are just things and they will be probably be sold to pawn shops or the first buyer by family members who have no interest in them.

Having a wonderful wife that understands that even men have certain needs is great. I also gave up my other hobby of R/C racing and I'm slowing selling my collection to pay for this new hobby.

Never even touched a firearm till 2 months ago, but already have 2 handguns and 1 rifle. This is just as addicting and the entire family loves this. The guns aren't expensive just the ammo.

I keep an old gun case in my truck. When I get a new gun I can't conceal I put in old gun case and bring it in. wife never knows. I also pay for her gambling (slots) habit.

Lee 4-hole Turret press; Cheaper, yes. Less, no!

I decided to go with the Lee 4 hole Turret Press Kit.I looked at it at Midway and i also watched the setup on youtube, and it looks pretty simple. Two pieces of advice i got where to purchase a digital scale to use instead of the analog one that comes with the kit and the Lee Auto-Disk Powder Measure Update Kit.

I started out years ago on a RCBS Rockchucker (borrowed) and then stopped for several years. Started back with a Lee pro 1000 but kept looking at the 4 hole turret. Finally got one and just about to retire the 1000! Yes the pro churned them out faster but the turret gives me much better control. And being able to set each caliber up on it's own turret, change out and begin loading in minutes is the game changer! You've made an excellent choice.

As long as WalMart sells 9mm Federal 100 round Value Pack for $20, it's not worth the time it would take me to reload. If I shot .40 or .45, it'd probably be worth it though.

Not smoking, as well as not going to bars/clubs frees up a lot of 'next gun' and bullet money. :)

I agree if only shooting 9mm; Course I would still reload anyway 'cause I love it, but I do reload 9, 40 and 45.

Spending Plan

Forum Friends:

My Wife and I have been attending a community education class on money management.

I took the ideas from the class and devised a spending plan (budget) using Excel 2007.

It is pretty neat if you are willing to track all your expenditures you will know at a quick glance exactly where by more than a dozen categories your money is going.

The goal from this class is to first find 1% of your gross income in a month that can be redirected to savings but more importantly you need to follow the 60, 20, 20 rule which is if I have $100 for savings $60 goes to long term retirement, $20 for emergency saving and $20 emotional savings and in our case I had my direct deposit set up to automatically direct those monies to dedicated savings accounts and the balance into my checking to cover bills.

Emotional savings is used for the I have to have it and you have not budgeted for it. This is critical to have in place if you are serious about a spending plan (budget). Otherwise after the first impulse (unplanned) purchase most get discouraged and give up on the budget.

The ultimate goal is to reach 10% of your gross directed to savings after you have paid down debt using the snow ball method and apply the 60, 20, 20 rule.

I tried linking the Excel spreadsheet to this forum but it would not work.

If there is anyone serious about getting a handle on managing your funds I would be more than happy to email you the spreadsheet and explain how it works.(You must have at least Excel 2007)

Please send me a private message include your email if you and spouse are ready to take control of your finances.(Both must be on board or it will not work)

I am not a financial planner and I have no interest making any money off this offer. I am doing this because in my marriage when we have a nest egg building and I know to the penny where our money goes we are happier and feel more in control and I can also buy more ammo for my S&W Shield which is always a bonus.
