How do you safely shine up antique nickel finish?

i have used flitz as well as mother's mag polish...both work great...when finished add a coat of renaissance wax

If the nickel is dull, polishing will help, and the products mentioned work well. If it is "frosted" or otherwise more deeply eroded, you may not see any difference with polish.

Other easy sources for Renaissance Wax is Midway and Brownell's. Also, most good wood-working sources carry it as it is a great furniture wax also. I purchased some form Highland Woodworking, Atlanta, GA.

I've used Flitz on my old nickel guns with great success. I follow a little regiment after polishing with Flitz to buff the surface real good with a cloth until no more black tarnish comes off. I then soak the gun down good with Sheath and let it sit for some weeks. Eventually I will wipe off the sheath and polish with wax. Seems to be working well for the guns I have done it to.

I'd think most any paste wax would give good results. If the old Simoniz auto wax (not liquid wax) is still available, it should work fine. I have used Simoniz on wood gun stocks and it works very well, also neutral shoe polish (colorless). But I already have a can of Simoniz on my shelf which is probably over 30 years old.

I checked the Simoniz website, and they still make Simoniz automotive paste wax, but it shows to be $10.45/can. Might want to ask some friends or neighbors if they have any in their garage.

I use Renaissance Wax, but I've also heard that Johnson Paste Wax will work well also.
