How does thumb safety work?

I own a non-safety m&p but curious how the thumb safety versions work. Does the safety lock the trigger or does it disengage the trigger bar from lowering the sear? With the safety on, can you still pull the trigger or is it locked? Thanks.

It stops the trigger bar from moving backwards when you pull the trigger.

The trigger does not move with it engaged, but I DO NOT test it while loaded. I just keep it engaged until I am ready to fire. I like it but it's not a necessity. Just occasionally check it is on while I'm carrying.

It blocks rearward movement of the trigger bar, if I recall correctly.
