Stopped in at the local shop the other day and came across a used
S&W 4040PD. As I understand it, its the same frame as the 3913 but in S&W 40 cal.
Its also an airweight frame. Has a fair sized scratch by the takedown lever. It
comes with the box and two mags.
I would use this as a concealed carry. They want $500.00 plus tax.
Thanks in advance.

To me that sounds like it is in the common range. A good searching option that I use is GunBroker.com and look for previously ended options. While not a true indicator of fair value, at least it gives me a ball-park of what they are selling or not selling for.

Okay did my GB search, apparently none listed or sold in the past 90 days. Checked ebang.com and found to listed but couldn't bring up sites. Apparently one was listed in the past at Bud's for $469, and one at Impact Guns for $619. A search on the forum here, brought up some posts saying that the $500 was a pretty average range.

That is an excellent price if it is in great condition. I am about to receive my 3rd 4040 from my ffl this week and they are great carry pistols. It is light weight and still has a good enough grip to keep .40 S&W rounds feeling good and not too jumpy. It really all comes down to condition for the price. If it is like new, it is a great price, if it has seen some use, but still nice overall, it's a good price. If it is well used it is an average price. They didn't make many of these pistols and they don't come along every day. Because of this the tend to run a little higher price then most S&W semi-autos.
Price does also depend on your area, here in AZ we don't see many S&W semi-autos that don't look like they haven't been ran over with a truck, so when a nice one becomes available, I usually buy it if I have the money. From reports of others in other parts of the country, S&W semi-autos seem a little bit more common and that is reflected in the prices.

I have a 4040PD and love it.
It is the same size as my 3913NL (Non Lady-Smith), as they take the exact same leather and the grips are interchangeable, shown with the plastic ones.
On a side note for mags that will fit into a 4040PD and cycle perfectly and also lock the slide back:
The 39, 39-2, 3906 and 952, both 8 & 9 rounder's, the 8 rounder's from 3913LS and NL with both flat bottom and pinkie finger bases.
Maybe someone can chime in here as to why they made that special spring loaded ball bearing follower and marked the mags special for the M4040?
Doing a check with "dial caliper", they are dimensionally the same only made of Stainless Steel.

I usually go with my gut and web searches to tell if it is a good deal or not. At the end of the day, if you don't have buyers remorse then you made a good deal.
