Has anyone here owned one of these semi custom compact 1911 style .45 pistols from the late 70s-early 80s? I saw one for sale at $750 with adjustable sites (which they all might have had) and an ambi-safety. Visually it's a very formidable businesslike gun. I'm not too hot on the squared trigger guard and those built in finger rests in the frame might not fit everyone. Because such a gun cannot come into Ca. and we can only buy what's already here, the price would, or could be higher because of limited availability. Thanks for any info you might have.

I think older Safari Arms pistols were made by Olympic Arms. Have seen a few and were not impressed by the fit and finish. And I have not heard good things about them. The built in finger thing doesn't feel right either. However this is just my opinion based on limited experience.

A friend had one. I shot it a few times. That built in finger grove/finger rest felt ... weird, for lack of a better word.

As said by Kanewpadle, my friends was built by Oly.

I hope it's not the one I had.
I bought one of the first ones, and after 6 rounds the head of the firing pin peened out into a mushroom. Safari Arms sent me another firing pin, saying mine had somehow missed being heat treated.
The gun had numerous continual malfunctions, and I sold it or traded it off.
It was a very neat gun at the time, chock full of all the custom modifications it would have cost lots of $$$ to have done to a stock .45 by a gunsmith.

They weren't all that great. I wouldn't pay more than about $300-$350 for one. Then only for nostalgia's sake............

I owned one back in the day, it was next to useless. Literally. Useless was a AMT Skipper. They laid side by side in a footlocker in my closet and I carried either a Colt Commander or a Randall.

Ditto, except I had the AMT Hardballer (what a name) and an early a Safari Arms though not at the same time. Bought the SA new, it was horrible even with my 100% reliable Colt mags. And I agree it just felt "weird"-not sure why I got it in the first place. Ah, youth lol.

I don't have any experience with the Safari Arms model but I do have to admit to being dumb enough to have owned TWO:o AMT Hardballers. Never could get a full magazine through either one without a malfunction.
