How many former Air Force do we have here?

USAF civilian for 15 years. At least in my position there was a lot of intermixing of civilian and military personnel, and I always had some military personnel working for me in addition to civilians. Everything was always on a first-name basis, nobody used rank much, enlisted or officer. Main difference was some people wore uniforms, others didn't. At the time I left, there were quite a few formerly military positions being taken over by civilians. At some bases, there are more civilians than military, and in some places, base personnel are largely civilian. But I don't think there are any civilian pilots yet.

Even tho this thread is several years old...USAF has the second best mess halls. First being the submarines of course (how else you going to get them in that thing). We also have the best quarters for enlisted, beautiful WAFs, and if you want to go big & bad, go Para Rescue.

OK, to be clear, USAF also has the best golf courses, 'tho I did appreciate Oceana NAS GC. Y'all can joke about basic, etc.... But we own tee times ;D

Yup, worked on these for eight years among many others.

Youngest son, Air Force Academy 2005-2009, currently a C-130 pilot

If she has a good "resume" (good grades, atheletics, student leadership, etc.) look into the Air Force Academy.

I see this thread is 3 years old. I severed from August 1966 to Oct 1986, I worked as a Air policeman for about a year until I was injured in a training accident. retrained into Air transportation served for 4 years, injured again, the powers wanted to discharge me but I appealed and retrained into Motion picture processing moved to Vandenberg AFB, got to see a lot of missile launches. There was a overage in the field and was forced to retrain into base supply, this was truly some of the most boring job, until I got to mange the base WRM Kits and the War Reserve material for the base. Everything was Top Secret and you pretty much got the stuff you needed. I was on a now closed SAC base.

I was not but three of my kids went to the USAF academy and currently fly for the AF. All of them say of all the branches, their choice of the AF was a good one. All are under 30 and have seen parts of the world and sights I will never get to see.

Me too, 59-62 Air Sea Rescue.. Had a Great time for 2 years in Japan..

Life IS rosy, in the rear view mirror (27 years and some change). I stayed in so long they started sending me nastigrams to retire ;). I submitted my paperwork while I was TDY to Ali Air Base, Iraq.

I was a crew chief, primarily on C-141s & C-5s. That special experience identifier allowed me to stay at Travis AFB, CA a majority of my career (hint, hint). I didn't get a long tour assignment until I requested one.

I will say that the services are a bit different than they were even a decade ago. The Army didn't seem to have the best living arrangements at either of the bases I spent time at, in Iraq. Regardless - I have mucho respect for all of them!

USAF '66-'70 Langley Field Va. Never marched an inch after tech school. 7 to 4 job with and hour lunch. Probably worked 5 weekends in 3 years at Langley. Jet Engine Mechanic on C-130's.
