All right, let's say you've made the jump in carry guns from the venerable 1911 type to the M&P 9. The gun comes with two magazines. That's plenty for carry; one in the gun, one for the spare.

But how many mags to acquire? Knowing that someday, there may be a new AWB?

How many is enough? I have the two that came with the gun, and two more coming.

I have 6 for my Glock M36 .45 and only 5 for my M&P .45.

The 5 for my M&P, one in the gun, 2 in the holster and 2 in the console in my pickup. I am considering getting two more.

I do at least 4 mags per gun:

1 in the gun
1 for spare carry
1 stashed either in the house or truck center console depending on if it's on HD or carry duty
1 dedicated for range use

remember too, that mags are technically wear items. You can replace floor plates, followers and springs, but bad feed lips make it a gonner.

I have loads of 59xx S&W mags, as they fit in my 5906, my 6906 and my KelTec P-11. If you have both full sized and compact M&P in the same caliber, maybe a few extra full sized stashed away above and beyond what you feel is enough. You can always sell or trade away.

I currently have 8 AR magazines and over a dozen AK mags.

With tongue in cheek: If you need to ask how many, you need more!

Seriously, though, magazines wear out, get lost, damaged etc. I wouldn't be happy with any less than 6 for a pistol I intend to keep for a lifetime. I'd be happier with 10. If you have variations of the same gun, say several 1911s or ARs, then 10 mags for each and every one of 'em is likely too many. Only you can balance how much you want to spend vs. the odds of not having enough.

I shoot at the range slot, I have 15 mags for my m&p9 and about 37 mags for my Ar15.

I have a .380 Shield EZ. One in the gun and wear 3 in my mag pouch, have two more in my car and an additional two in my range case.

You have a couple of 12 or 15 round magazines, grab a couple of the 17 round mags, should all be good!

Minimum on a carry gun 6...... one in the gun two on the belt (though I generally only carry one spare in my "Burb of the Burgh") and a full spare set.

Like others I accumulated a bunch more over the past 30 years I've owned Smith, Sig and Beretta autos.

I would be and have been stocking magazines "deep". The same goes for ammo. Remember the ban? There is no reason to believe that situation or worse is not on the horizon. You may not be able to run down to Academy and get a few more.

I like to have enough mags that I dont have to waste range time loading them. If I have enough magazines for a decent range session (10 for doublestack, more for singlestack, for example) I feel like thats enough. I hate thumbing rounds at the range when I should be SHOOTING. I load my magazines in front of the tv.

This comes from a friend who is heavy into competition .He said he keeps 15 in use and springs ect to keep them working good .He keeps 10 new in wrappers if one gets damaged during practice or competition he rotates in a new one and orders / buys a replacement immediately .His worry is the same as yours as far as a mag ban goes his thinking is those mags are going to be like gold if that ever comes to pass .

Unless the new ban includes possession, not just new manufacture/purchase. In that case, they are not worth much at all unless you are willing to roll the dice.

You can usually get the best buys in multiples of three...……… lol. And those little adapters for the 17 rounders are really cheap from S&W.
