How many people do you take to the range?

I'm going to the range tomorrow. I only seem to go four or five times a year, and everyone wants to go with me. Tomorrow I'm taking my nephew, my brother-in-law, my Mom, my friend and his daughter. I won't get to shoot much, because I'll be helping them and playing "range officer."

One of the reasons I don't go often is because it's a 50 mile round trip. There's a private range closer, and I've thought about joining, but I can only take one guest at a time. I also occasionally think about sneaking out and going by myself, but I'd feel a little guilty about leaving someone behind that's been asking me to go, and honestly, I do enjoy the company.

Maybe I just wrote this to vent a little. Thanks for listening. But if you have any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them.:o

Too much family is a blessing

Hi Truckemup,
I often wish I had folks that could go with me.
Everyone is so busy and all the "Kids" in the family are at college or working. They all used to like to go.
I have a couple of buddies that go from time to time.
I think you are a lucky man.
Enjoy your time at the range.
Mike

How many people I would go to the range with depends on their level of firearms knowledge. If everyone is knowledgeable and can "do their own thing," it wouldn't bother me to have a carload of people.

But if I have to teach/train/monitor them, I will only take one, MAYBE two at the most.

If your freight hauling schedule permits it, I would join the private range to get your own time in, and continue to assist your family several times a year at the other range. What you're doing with them is fantastic and should not cease. But if we're serious about being able to defend ourselves, we need to practice as much as possible. But you know all that anyway.

Are you out on the road all week, or do you have a little time at home between loads? If the latter, could you utilize those times at home to get a little practice time in?

My range time is restricted also, and so I've tried to concentrate on making it count: analyzing errors between shots, practicing presentation without firing, and so on. I can usually get a profitable time in in 45min. or so. I usually burn less than 80 rounds per session.

Don't know if it was worth your time to read that or not -hope it might have suggested some ideas in your mind.

Best wishes on a solution. Let us know what happens, if you think of it.

For me it is one. Usually when I take someone else to the range, they are a first time shooter and I will not be distracted.

I usually shoot out in the desert so numbers are not an issue.
I'm out at my spot every Monday and usually take Two people with, and the rest just come on out as they get a chance.
Average is Five to Ten friends.
Everyone is well versed on range safety, so we do run it like a regular range with cold calls for target adjustment and scoring as well as line protocol.
Luckily my spot is less than Five minutes from home by quad or truck.

We're lucky enough to have rural property about 40 minutes from home on which I've built a range. Like many others, the number of people I will take is dependent on their experience level. When taking novice shooters, I rarely shoot. Target shooting is like hunting, it is important to be comfortable with the experience level of the people around you.

I like going with a few people, but found as you add more and more you it is difficult just getting to range with schedule conflicts. As far as decreased time shooting, not overly concerned as I enjoy watching others and the atmosphere.

I normally go to range at around 9am on Tues, Wed, & Friday. I got into this habit about 20 years ago. Since, I only use the outside pistol or rifle range I have the place to myself.

I am my own RO. I can practice shooting while moving, am able to draw and fire from a concealed holster, and can set up a target stand at any distance I want from 7 feet on out to 200 yards.

Most of the people I know who enjoy shooting are working in the mornings and are unable to shoot---The people I know who are retired are into golfing and shooting trap or skeet; they're not much into pistols & rifles.

I shoot registered trap on Sunday afternoons with group of about 20 old timers.

I try to keep the #'s low. I don't mind bring one or two guests tops. What bothers me is I'm the one who shelled out the $500 initiation fee and the $250 dues per year!

I know exactly what you mean. It is fun to have company but if you have too many, you don't get to enjoy any shooting yourself. I personally prefer to go by myself most of the time with "occasionally" bringing a guest. Any more than 2 guests is more of a chore than a pleasure not only because I don't get to shoot as much, but also because we usually end up shooting a bunch of guns from my collection...and guess who gets to clean all those guns??

I have an indoor range 5 minutes from the house and have a senior pass (cost was $200 plus tax - for a year pass) good for one shooter/one lane, with no time restrictions; additional shooters are only $7.50 per shooter. I am 22 miles/25 minutes from my "farm", with three different ranges set up there.

I prefer to go to the indoor range by myself... so I can shoot! If one of my friends wants to go along or meet me there I'll accommodate them. I have a family friend who is divorced and has a 16 year old daughter. I make exceptions for them!

I have taken as many as three adults and four young boys at one time to the farm. I'd prefer not to do that again, for obvious reasons.

I enjoy working with new shooters in small groups and will pretty much do anything to properly introduce them to firearms and shooting. I've added to my shooting collection so as to be able to start them with a single action .22 and work up the chain to as big as a .45 LC.

As a matter of fact, I think I'll go to the farm right now. I've got my range bags packed and ready to go. It's way too nice to be here sitting at this keyboard! See y'all later! :D
