How Many Used M-16 Do You Really Need?

A small town in this area received ten M-16's from the LESO (Law Enforcemnt Service Office) for military surplus hardware. Population of 950 and four part time officers. Two squad cars. They recently turned them over to the county sheriff for safekeeping in his armory. The officers are nice guys but are getting a lot of jazz about where they left the Striker and Bradley parked. I don't think they would get into a "Heat" type shootout with only two stoplights in town,but, you never know.
The government "gives" this surplus away so I almost don't blame them, but, five M-16 to a squad car? :D

LEOs have been getting them ever since LAPD got caught with their pants down in that shoot out with the bank robbers, and the cops had to borrow AR15s and ammo from a LGS. Our police feel the need to be armed at least as well as the average infantryman.

Alien invasion is always eminent. If only big government understood all the threats we actually may face.
 
I'd rather see the Feds passing them out to the Counties than torching them or sending them to the Mexican drug cartels. Of course my first choice would be to have the Feds sell the unwanted M16A1s through the CMP program.

Well - Now that a shot to the head with a .38 doesn't work anymore the cops NEED full auto rifles....
Besides --- One of 20 might hit the BG - But one of just 6?

Thats what I thought. They can Deputize in event of an emergency too.

A partner told me his friends Dad used to take them out shooting .45 1911 and ammo once a year.

The Dad worked at a US Post Office in FL and had a 1911 in the drawer. Partner says he thought all PO (Postmaster) used to have one on site, but not sure how accurate this is. Sounds plausible since recent list of how many Federal Agencies carry.

They would get in (new) ammunition: two hundred rounds each year, needing it or not, so they would go out shooting the previous years ammo supply.

We used to have little sheet metal devices that limited the M16A1 to a semi-auto fire. You removed the pistol grip, slipped this device on and reinstalled the grip. Kept the selector from going to the full auto position. If I was in charge of passing these M16's out to LEOs I'd make these devices available as well.
 
4 LEOs so 4 rifles. You could say 4 more to canabalize in case something breaks on the first 4. So thats 8. Two more as spares.

Or

4 LEOs = 4 rifles. 4 more as spares if any in the first set go down. Thats 8. Two more just in case

I was in my LGS when an officer from a nearby city came in to look at ARs. He said that his department with permission from the city government was going to allow them to carry an AR in their car if the officer purchased it. The mayor of this city recently said they didn't have enough crime to justify spending much money on the police department (yes, she's a product of low information voters and also dumb as a box of rocks). This city also just cleared something like thirty years of firearms from it's evidence room. Now you know their had to be enough valuable firearms collected over thirty years that they could have made a deal for at least a few ARs to equip some of their officers but being a good and responsible city, they had all the guns destroyed. Supposedly one gun shop tried to get them to at least sell the grips off of S&W's, Colts and such but they wouldn't even do that. Not enough crime but they just had a murder between rival drug dealers and the loser had wounds in the back from low left to right shoulder with 7.62X39 casings on the ground.

The number needed depends on how many break down, how many are used for training and how many are carried.

I think some guys on this forum have more than 10 AR's.

I have 2 and I want more. I hope I never NEED more, but I sure want more. ;)
 
Like I said, these rifles were available through a government law enforcemnt assistance program. This department decided to take advantage of it and got ten M-16's. They also aquired some NVG's (Night Vision Goggles) and a few other goodies. I don't question the wisdom of having a patrol rifle, to compliment the service auto and shotgun. In most small towns like this they will qualify once a year. A lot of officers will only shoot ammo if provided by their department . The thought is the ink pen is more important than the service auto, shotgun, or rifle, since they feel they will use it a lot more often. A lot of coppers are not gun guys. I don't think these M-16's will be overused. They are not the military. I guess the NVG's can be used to observe who sneaks out of town at O Dark Thirty. I am going to suggest that below the "We Protect and Serve" on the squad cars they have painted, "We Got One In The Rack and Four In The Back" :D
 
The numbers sound off. Right now the limit for 1033 program M16s is 1 per commissioned officers. I believe in the past it was only 80% coverage.
Preparations need to be realistic, but having a "can't happen here" mentality is pure foolishness.

I've seen those things...most were broken off. They were also easily removed but few managed to get the pistol grip back on without losing the safety selector spring.
 
I'm just glad I retired before they started to have shaved heads and swat coveralls.

They look better with the shaved heads than they did when they had hair past their collar and sideburns as long as the grooming standard would allow.....
