I have a 9c and FS .40. They have about 1,000 rounds each though them and I field strip and clean after every use. But they have not been detailed striped and cleaned. By detail striped I mean take out the trigger assembly and clean every spring, pin and part. Same with the sear block and firing pin/striker. Then degrease and clean the frame and re-lube everything and put it back together.

Does anyone have a feel as to how often this should be done or is it necessary at all?

That's a good question, I have about 1500 through my mp fs but I do field strip after each use. I was kind if wondering the same thing lately.

I field strip and clean everything with a stiff brush. I use compressed air out of a "real" compressor to blast any left over gunk out of everything. Then I use a light coat of Frog Lube and my blow dryer to let it settle back into the metal like the directions say and wipe off the out side. I also put a teeny drop on all the points the manual says to and ONLY use air to clean out the "firing pin". I do take that apart for inspection and that just gets a wipe down.

Even the manual states that under normal conditions nothing more than removing the slide, recoil spring and barrel is all that needs to be removed. You should be able to clean and maintain the gun from there so that it should function perfectly and last a very long time.

If the gun gets severe use, mud, dirt, sand, water, etc., then further disassembly could be required.

What Bob said. The design of the M&P is such that it doesn't really need a detail strip. Honestly, I think if you go after it with a tooth brush with some cleaner on it that should handle what's necessary.

I use Frog Lube.

Having said that, there is a point when I would detail strip my gun. If the trigger ever felt sluggish, that's when I would detail strip it.

Meaning you have to take off rear sight. do you zero the gun back after that?

When I have to do that,I already have the rear sight marked to go back in the exact same spot. I do take "zero" shots to check and they have always been dead on. I have 9 M&P's

I completely take down my Glock everytime, because I like things clean. I know it can run without that for 1000's of rounds, but I like it.

My Shield I take down as much as possible without removing rear sight.

And for that,I would VERY strongly suggest having a qualified S&W gunsmith do that if you've never gone past the normal cleaning. For a "newbe" it (total disassembly),can turn into a nightmare for re-assembly.

"We" use to love it when some one would walk in the door with a box of parts and ask if we could put it back together for them. :o

I've taken my M&P 9c completely apart twice. Once when I first got it out of curiosity and once after two years and about 8K rounds.

It's not hard to do but I found the frame to be pretty clean and haven't done it again (13K rounds), just field strip and clean well after firing.

The slide is another story. I've found that cleaning the striker channel and striker every 1K rounds to be a good idea. Lots of fouling in there that could lead to light strikes. Clean with q-tips and M-Pro 7 and blow out. I don't remove the extractor or the sights any more and haven't had any problems.

If you do want to remove the sights, just measure well on each side and you should be OK. For competition you probably want to take a punch to the range just in case.

Wait another 20,000 rounds or so, and then only if it really looks bad. As often as you clean with a basic field strip, unless you drop it in a mud hole, you really should not need to detail strip.

I take a shower every day and attempt to get into those nasty crevices and clean each time.

(that's what I thought of first when I saw the thread title - ROFL)

I just field strip. I have taken it pretty much completely apart for the Apex DCAEK but didn't notice any dirty things there so probably won't unless I notice something out of the ordinary.

Why would you have to take the rear sight off? Cant you get the striker out without removing the rear sight? I thought you could.

The only part that requires the rear sight removal is if you are removing the striker blocker (along with SB spring and spring cap/cover). The striker can be easily removed by removing the slide end cap. Search YouTube for many videos showing how to work on the M&P's.

My M&P 9L is used strictly for USPSA, so I shoot it a bit. I field strip and clean about every 1000 rounds.
I normally do a detail strip and clean to my competition guns once a year…in the winter time…when I’m really bored.

I clean my guns after each range trip. This means removing the slide & spraying it with brake cleaner. Hoppe's 9 on the barrel. I don't touch the lower except to wipe it with a paper towel. Then the lube of the week, & back in the safe, or holster. When I buy a carry gun, I put a few hundred rounds down the pipe to make sure it is reliable, & then carry it. I don't really ever shoot it again, unless I should need it to defend myself. I have a Colt Gold Cup, & Sig 220 I use for target shooting. I might relube after 6 months should it be necessary, or pass a patch down the barrel to remove the lint. GARY
