just got a older smith revolver.....5" nickle, fixed sights, marked .38 special cartridge, s/n SV811xxx
any help on how old?

SCSW puts the production between 1942 and 1945. Would love to see pics.

SV811xxx is right at the end of the SV prefix, which shortly thereafter became the simple S prefix with the same number sequence. It is very likely yours shipped in March, 1946. Quite a lot of them in that range went out that month.
The nickel finish is probably not original. Can you post some photos? Be sure to show both sides, but we especially need to see the right side.
