I've been offered a 36-1 with the 3" heavy barrel in a trade. It looks good...I'd say at least 90% from looking at the pics. I don't see many references to these. Is this a rare bird?

Hi, they are not nearly as common as the 2" version, but are readily available. Nice guns for shooting, easier to use than the shorter barrels.

+1 to what Murphydog said.
You'll find a 3 inch J frame is about the best combo of small and "shootable" as there is.

I'd like to have one...I just don't think this trade is going to happen (it's my decision but I'd rather keep my M&P40c which is what the guy wants for it)

Yes, I think with careful shopping you can find a nice 36-1 for less than you paid for your M&P40c, and then you would have both guns to shoot :)

Picked this up last summer from a fellow forum member, SpeedingBullet. Added J-frame target grips purchased from VM. Many thanks to both.

Good shooters, point nicely. JTB7

I bought this old/new about 1970 36 about 3 years ago. It was the only gun I ever bought on the internet. It turned out to be unfired in the box with everything. Made the mistake trying it out with my wife. She instantly proclaimed it hers!

I still have my 3" M36-1 bought new in 1980. It has always just felt right in my hands... that's why I bought it, why I kept it. I bought the banana targets with it... I was thinner then, could conceal it IWB under a light shirt or sweater.

About the only thing I could add to this would be finding a target version of a 3' Mod 36 proper in box with all the goodies for a reasonable price. I know they're out there, it's the reasonable price thing that's holding me back.

I don't think the word "rare" fits in this situation. I sold a mint 3" HB RB on the forum about a year ago for $350 plus shipping, and it sat there for awhile before anybody opted for it. I personally prefer the pencil barrel 3", like pictured below. If you could get your gun in the $400 range that would probably be a decent deal for both sides.

I haven't anything particularly constructive to add, but here is a photo of my 1971 3" RB M36 ...

I have a 3" 36 with a serial number of J122XXX. It is one of my most prized handguns. It's accurate and easy to carry.
It's not a heavy barrel but I would recommend anyone who likes revolvers and the older J frames especially, to pick up any type of 3" barreled J frame if the chance arose.

I have no affiliation with this place but saw one today for $449 in West Palm Bch FL. If anyone needs to know where, E-Mail me for location. Don't know if there was a box, but I think so.
