I'm looking at a Model 17-1. I looked in SCSW and it says that the -1 engineering change - thread from right to left on extractor rod- is "(scarce)".

Anyone know HOW scarce? The price is higher than you would normally see a dash-something-else sell for. I'm just curious. I know that I have not seen one before.

Thanks. Jim

These were made for about two years, or about the same amount of time (roughly) as the preceding model 17. They are not unicorns like the 28-1 or 29-1 and I have seen several for sale.

Interestingly, I have seen a few that were documented to have shipped in about 1967, or 6+ years after they "should" have been sold. Never say never with S & W. :)

Jim, all of the "-1" K-frames are somewhat uncommon. The 16-1 supposedly does not even exist. The -1 change was made for two years. The no-dash change was made for two years. Yet the -1s bring a premium. From SCSW, the 14, 15, 17 and 18 models are valued at a 25% - 50% premium. The 19-1 is a 100% premium. Obviously, the amount of premium for any given gun depends largely on condition.

A few years ago, I obtained a very nice 14-1 and paid $750 for it. I think it's worth more. I reckon the 17-1 you are looking at would be worth about whatever you might be willing to pay. They don't show up very often.

Good luck.

Charlie

I have had two, sold one. Didn't pay a premium and but I did get maybe a $100- 200 bump over 17-2 similar condition. I have deduced that the -1's were only made for 9-12 months, and no, I don't know how I came up with that number. I followed these for quite a while, and from my increasingly fading memory, the lowest # was K418xxx and the highest was k428xxx. Most were in the k426xxx range, as were both of mine. Perhaps it would be helpful if owners of 17-1's would post the first 3 digits of their serial numbers.

About 5 years ago I decided to collect a 8 3/8" model 17 in all versions through 17-4. I didn't try to buy them in version order - when I found one I liked I bought it. The 17-1 was very hard to find.

My 8 3/8" Model 17-1 is K426912 and was shipped March 1962.

I recently purchased Ser# K419088 which shipped in March 1962. 39 days before I was born. It is in outstanding condition. Did I pay a premium? Probably a few hundred more than a comparable no dash or -2, but I'm thrilled to have it.
