Just purchased an M&P 22 today. The FQA section of the S&W website says not to dry fire the M&P 22. If you are not supposed to dry fire how do you decock? Tried to search for this but was unsuccessful. Thanks

If you pull back the slide about 3/16" or so, and then pull the trigger, the slide should be back far enough to allow the gun to fire without the firing pin hitting anything.

Thanks much for the help. I've dry fired it twice. Do you think that caused any damage?

It will take more than two dry fires to peen the forward edge of the rim recess of the chamber enough to cause much damage. What happens when it is peened is that sometimes a burr is raised hindering chambering or ignition may be haphazard, depending both on the gun and amount of dry firing done.

Plastic wall anchors, or sometimes I use spent cartridges. drop in and pull the trigger just make sure they were shot already. Wall anchors are the safest.

Thanks again. I used a plastic anchor. Going to the range today. I will let you know how it goes.
