Re: OP. Ditsy bimbo? Grow up. Such characterizations are as uncalled for as the supposition that gun owners are frightened rednecks.

Bruce, I appreciate the advice. Maybe tone down the aggression? I don't think you've been around many young women lately. By ditsy bimbo I meant she isn't your average 20 year old still stuck in high school talking about Jersey Shore type. I wasn't by any means trying to generalize rednecks considering I am one. But I do agree with most things you said and honestly a lot of it is good advice. I know I can't just force her to shoot, and if she never does that's fine with me. But the point of the post was to look for better ways to approach it that might make her more comfortable. I like the ideas of using cap guns or BB guns to start, that's easy and we can do it in the back yard. I also just found out her older brothers and sisters shoot so I might try to get one of them involved. The next time her and I shoot archery there might just be a BB gun around ;)

I've had the opportunity to do instruction sessions for groups of women on a couple of occasions. Get her to join in with a group of other women if possible. I do a 45 minute abbreviated basic handgun instruction emphasizing the handling/safety measures. Then (with the help of a bunch of experienced shooters and using only .22 RF handguns with red dot sights), and with bench's and sandbag rests, have them all shoot (one on one with experienced shooters). The sandbag rest, and the red dot are important as it lets them shoot very good the first time. I had one left hander and no left hand gun with red dot (all thumb rest target grips). I tried having her shoot my Mod 17 with iron sights, and she was all over the place. I then had her use a right handed gun and red dot and she shot nearly all tens. Getting them to shoot good groups raised the enthusiasm a lot. One gal shot a dime sized group (50 ft) and said this isn't hard, then we showed her how to hold it in one hand ans shoot bullseye style. She returned and joined the club and brought her 15 yr old daughter with her.

My .02 - I'm an NRA rifle instructor working mostly with my son's Boy Scout troop. Think back; in Cub Scouts we put a BB gun in their hands (Red Rider's). They got comfortable with that. Then we put a single shot, bolt action 22 in their hands. Then, years later, we put a Ruger 10/22 in their hands. At some point they wandered by the trap range and, walking by, got used to the sound of the 20 gauges. Some took to shotguns, some didn't.

The rest, as they say, is history!

Tell her you've been cheating on her, then hand her a loaded gun.

I bet she will take to shooting pretty quick!

If you wanted to spend the money, buy a nice blowback bb pistol. It has all of the same features as a real gun except for how lethal and loud a real one is. Just a thought
