I would like to know how to remove and replace the pistol grips on a 5906 and a 6906. I am just now getting on the S&W auto train as I just stole the two of them(I know I am bad) from someone who just didn't like them. They are absolutly from the box new with square trigger guards. They are both wonderful carry guns! I just don't want to screw anything up by bending or breaking anything. I know my way around tools and guns but have never even held a Smith until now. any help would be op great help for a guy late to the party!!!!

1. Remove the magazine.
2. With a punch drive out the pin at the bottom of the grip (it doesn't matter which way you drive the pin out)
3. Pull down on the grips (they should move down about 1/4"
4. With your fingers inside of the magazine well, push the grips out enough to clear the small tabs holding them in.
5. Spread the grips wide enough to slide them off of the frame.

The single stack frames are a little more difficult. You won't be able to get your fingers inside of the magazine well and will have to lift them with your finger nails or use something like a thin plastic putty knife to lift them.

Do you have a place to get replacement grips for the 6906? The only ones I could find were Hogue's. When I got them they would not fit. A call to Hogue's confirmed that they were only for the -3 models.

Take care not to unintentionally snag and exert pressure on the small angled plate against which the slide stop lever plunger rests. This is the forward part of the sideplate just at the top/front of the left side part of the grip. Tweaking the sideplate can create the potential for damage to the sideplate's legs (which snap around the head of the left end of the sear pin) and can cause functioning problems related to slide stop lever functioning.

I used the same Hogue grips on a couple of very early production ('89/90 vintage - square trigger guard & narrow barrel tab/slide breech face) 6906's which fit the 4013TSW. (I also used them on both issued and personally-owned 4013TSW's, as well.)

I discovered that an issue with the wrap-around style Hogue grips is making sure the hard plastic hooks on the rear of the grips properly seat in the frame under the mainspring. Sometimes I had to slightly adjust the clearance of the hooks to properly seat one or both of them over the frame's inset to either side of the spring.

Naturally, properly seating the hook on one side of the wrap-around grips and then having to constantly exert tension to stretch and seat the other side, while not being able to see in the frame because one end was already seated, made for a bit of difficulty at times. ;)

Thank you so much!!

Thank you all for the info. I really am new to these weapons and want to make sure they will serve me well as my new carry weapons!! Hope you all have a great day!!
