I apologize for the noob question, I have owned firearms for over 21yrs and have never had a desire to change out sights. Now that I own a M&P Shield and a M&P 40 and have read all the posts about all the great sights out there, I'm thinking about changing the sights. My question...is this something I can do myself or something I should take to a gun shop? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I own the Shield 9MM and I sent my slide out to have TruGlo TFO sights installed. Shield sights are on REALLY tight. You should use a sight remover tool. Plus the rear sight has a small spring underneath it, that if your not careful, can pop out and get lost. But, there is a video on Youtube showing how to remove the sights with a punch and hammer.

Had a local gunsmith do mine. $20 and 15 minutes.
If you are putting on tritium sights, you REALLY need to use a proper sight-tool/press. I you don't have one or know someone who does, go to a gunsmith who does. (And MAKE SURE they are using a proper press.) Solid or just fiber-optic sights can be installed using a proper brass punch.
If you buy the sights at some shops, they may install them for free.

Removing the rear sight on my .40 was pretty straight forward, but the rear sight on my Shield was very, very hard to remove with a hammer and punch. The Shield rear sight is designed with ridges (one front and one back) that make the actual contact with the slide. These create the pressure that hold it in place and are also what make the sight so difficult to remove. With a LOT of effort I finally got mine removed, but I don't think I'll tackle it again without a proper press.
So, I have to agree with Robotech on this: If you don't have a press, take it to a qualified gunsmith.

I will join in by suggesting that you take it to a gunsmith, or send the slide back to the manufacturer of the sight brand you wish to have installed. I found that without proper tools, installing M&P sights can be a real problem. For my M&P 45, I found that the factory installed front and rears were so tight in the dovetails I bent a brass punch trying to drift them out. I switched to a steel punch, but they still wouldn't budge. Its just better to spend the money and have a gunsmith take care of them unless you want to break down and buy a sight tool.

If you are looking for TruGlo TFO sights SPECIFICALLY for your Shield, they are not yet on the market thus no part number.
Others have installed the M&P TFO sights on the Shield but hold on for a while as TruGlo wrote me that they are in the process to produce Shield specific TFO sights.
