Introduced in House (01/30/2020)
Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety Act of 2020

This bill makes various changes to the federal framework governing the sale, transfer, and possession of firearms and ammunition. Among other things, the bill does the following:

generally requires individuals to obtain a license to purchase, acquire, or possess a firearm or ammunition;
raises the minimum age—from 18 years to 21 years—to purchase firearms and ammunition;
establishes new background check requirements for firearm transfers between private parties;
requires law enforcement agencies to be notified following a firearms-related background check that results in a denial;
creates a statutory process for a family or household member to petition a court for an extreme risk protection order to remove firearms from an individual who poses a risk of committing violence;
restricts the import, sale, manufacture, transfer, or possession of semiautomatic assault weapons and large capacity ammunition feeding devices;
restricts the manufacture, sale, transfer, purchase, or receipt of ghost guns (i.e., guns without serial numbers);
makes trafficking in firearms a stand-alone criminal offense;
requires federally licensed gun dealers to submit and annually certify compliance with a security plan to detect and deter firearm theft;
removes limitations on the civil liability of gun manufacturers;
allows the Consumer Product Safety Commission to issue safety standards for firearms and firearm components;
establishes a community violence intervention grant program; and
promotes research on firearms safety and gun violence prevention.

Yes...

Read and sign, everyone!

I've sat on the fence about the NRA. I've heard from some members who believe they've been let down.

In all earnestness I ask, what is the NRA doing to stop this?*

Thank you.

*Please don't misconstrue my query as an invitation to bash the NRA. I genuinely want to hear arguments whether or not to support the NRA lobbying effort by joining.

The NRA is the most powerful gun lobby we have and if it wasn't for them we would have gun laws like the rest of the world and maybe even worse. They are doing all they can with the money and support they get from members and no support and money at all from free loading gun owners. I'm thinking the numbers I heard are 18 million gun owners and 5 million NRA members. That's 13 million free loaders.
I have posted before that I think all gun owners need to support the NRA and I do mean all gun owners. My wife and I both belong. There are also local gun rights organizations that need support. Larry

It’s actually worst then that. ATF estimates that there are 423M firearms in the US (manufactured since 1968, so the number of actual guns is probably greater) and some 100M gun owners. NRA claims 5M members, so that’s only 5% of gun owners, if all these numbers are Good. There’s up of 95M freeloaders out there. I have issues with the NRA, but not strong enough to cancel my membership or cease contributing when I can.

I fear now there is good chance now for H.R 5717 being passed with the threat of a complete Democrat take over.

We will see. The Democrats will still control the House, but with what will be an even slimmer majority. Many Democrats have come to the realization that their far-left policies are starting to drive away their voters. If the senate remains in Republican control, I don't think this is going anywhere and since it is a tax, such bills must originate in the House and be passed by the Senate. I don't care what Joe or Kamala say, taxes cannot be raised nor created by executive order.

Get ready

Getting this passed in the house will happen but not as it is written. This will be a real fight and there are Democrat's that won't vote for it as it is now written. If we keep the Senate there is a chance that most of the bad things in the bill will be removed. Biden will have his hands full and this may not even get out of committee.

From the Firearms Policy website. Read the proposed bill in totality, then if you choose, fill out the form and sign the petition. Use our system of government to inform your elected representatives of your position on this proposed bill.
In our current political climate, I would not presuppose any position is a sure thing.

Part of the tactics used by the anti-Second Amendment crowd is to divide and conquer, usually by saying something like "Oh no, we're not going to outlaw your target rifle, just those 'weapons of war' that spray bullets and are only meant for killing people." The object is to lull part of the gun owners to sleep while they concentrate for a year on banning another particular class of firearms. Next year they'll have an excuse for banning what they didn't call for banning this year.

Guess what? Do you think your target rifle on an AR-15 platform will be safe? Guess again. Don't take my word for it, read the list of what they plan to ban, and right there in black and white is "Colt Match Target Rifles."

Another thing to think about. Your M-1 Carbine is on the list of exempt guns, but your 15 round magazine isn't.

It’s call “the thin edge of the wedge “.......

The list of points in that bill look like they were lifted directly from Joe Biden's website. Though there are a few more on the website that didn't make it into this particular bill.

The points on the Biden website are just a regurgitation of most of HR 5717. He is not original and I expect his first step will be a return to the 1994 AWB, but perhaps without a grandfathering clause nor a sunset clause.
