The Second Amendment Guarantee Act has been introduced in the US House. It prohibits states from making laws more onerous than Federal Law, at least pertaining to long guns at this moment.
Is it perfect? No.

And loads of commentary

No one here seems to want to comment on this. I wonder why?

The status of the bill...it went right to the Judiciary Committee the same day it was introduced...is that it's been shuffled off to the side, like just about every other "pro-gun" bill.

The lack of comments in this thread is ironic to me. You'd think a lot of people would be in favor of having restrictive state laws overridden by this bill. But to comment favorably on it here would be to say people are in favor of more "government intrusion" in their lives, instead of against it like when they discuss H.R.38, the bill concerning national reciprocity.

Can't have your cake and eat it, too.

But either way, H.R.3576 has about as much chance as going anywhere as does H.R.38.

Agree. States rights cut both ways. The feds have no business meddling in a state's internal affairs, even when it is (temporarily) to our benefit. Again, once they slide the Trojan horse in under the guise of 'helping' us and establish jurisdiction over state gun laws, we may find subsequent changes to the law to be less helpful. We will have forfeited a defense of states rights to contest it.

A bill like this should be unnecessary. SCOTUS should have declared all these prohibitive laws at all levels unconstitutional and ended the arguments right then.

Agreed if SCOTUS would step up and decide that the 2nd Amendment means we have the right to owns handguns for self protection in our homes, property and anywhere we have a legal right to be, that would be great. I don't think they will ever state that States cannot regulate carry to some extent. I don't think "Shall Issue" will ever be federally mandated.

Gotta be careful with these Federal laws preempting state laws. Hell gotta be careful with ANY federal laws. I am a firm believer in individual states running their own show. 50 different democratic laboratories determining what works and what doesn't. If California's laws work-other states will follow the lead and adopt. If they don't work other states will NOT follow their lead and will try something different. It's how our country was formed. I love visiting New York-love Long Island. Love Mass. Rode Island and Conneticuit. Beautiful countryside. HATE the politics and for that reason will never live there but I still enjoy visiting. LOVE Texas and Florida-great gun laws, no state income taxes and GREAT homestead protection regarding stiffing your creditors :D. If I ever decide to move it would be to one of these two states. Ditto Alabama and Mississippi (except for Mississippi-Charlie Sherrell lives there :p). But the thing is this country is 50 individual states under one Federal umbrella and we are free to choose whatever state we wish to live in.
Now I'm done :)

"Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with."
