Archangel will know!

I'm not an officianado when it comes to HS-6 but Archangel is. He has done extensive testing in +P 38spl loads. I have used it in those types of loads too. It works fine and meters exceptionally well. I have decided to use SR4756 for those and my 40S&W loads though.

Pressure/velocity ratio is better with SR4756 and that is why I use it in the 40S&W. According to posted data, you get more velocity with less pressure. I am shooting it in a Glock so I want to be careful.

HS-6 will work well too. Just watch for pressure signs. Don't overload that caliber. Go by the book.

Do you have a chronograph? I would like to know some of the ballistic details of your loads. Maybe some targets?

Have fun and be safe.

I'm a huge fan of HS-6, the more I use it the more I like it. Like Skip said, the published data shows it will deliver high velocity with lower pressures than other powders of a similar burn rate. I've found it delivers high velocities without any signs of high pressure. It's a very clean powder if loaded up near the top end of the charge range. I use Magnum primers when loading with HS-6 and have found Magnum primers will shrink the SD numbers to single digits. Most of the older loading manuals recommended use of Magnum primers with all 3 HS powders. (HS-5, HS-6 and HS-7) All but HS-6 are now out of production. BTW, HS-6 = W540 and HS-7 = W571 so if you find an old recipe with those powders you can directly substitute it's equal powder. I've used HS-6 with my .38 Special +P, middle to middle heavy range .357 Magnum, heavy .45 Auto and .45 Colt working loads with very good success. You can push your 40 S&W loads up to higher velocities with HS-6, you will like the results. HS-6 works very well with lead bullets but will also work well with jacketed bullets as well. I guess you can tell I really like this powder...

Hope this helps a bit...

thanks, ArchAngelCD

HS-6 is one of the few powders that has been readily available here locally in Oregon..... Availability is what really got me to look at using it. 40S&W with laser cast bullets 155g & 180g is what I have primarily been loading with it. I am pleased with my results so far with low end charges..... thanks for the feed back as I move to some mid-range loads.

smith crazy....... yes, some day I will try SR4756 but until I can find some I will continue to use HS-6

Thanks again

I have no experience loading the .40S&W so can't comment on that particular rd., but I do use HS6 with cast bullets in 9MM, .38Sp, light .357 loads, and .45 Colt with very good results.
