As we all know, powder is still hard to come by. One of the few powders that seem to be staying in stock for more than one millisecond is HS-6, which works well for me in 9mm. Has anyone tried HS-6 in the following calibers/combinations? What were your results? Not asking for load info, just how did the powder perform—did it burn completely, etc. The following combos are:

.45 ACP with 200 gr. plated bullet;

.380 with 95 gr. plated bullet;

.32 H&R with 60& 85 gr. XTP, and 100 gr. JSP.

In order to get enough HS-6 to make the shipping/hazmat worth it, I need to get 32 lbs of powder, hence my questions….

Tnx.:)

I only get on the board twice a week so it might be a few days before I can respond…..

Hs-6 sorta works with 200gr plated in 45acp. I have sorta ok results with WSF in 380 acp with 100gr plated. I would look for a faster powder, Accurate #5 will work well, W-231 and HP-38 will work better.
I have been hoping to find so Be-86 to try for 45acp and 380acp.

I tried HS-6 in 45acp with Missouri Bullet's 230gr RNL and 200gr SWC. Both were Hi-Tek coated bullets.

I was not impressed.

HS-6 is a great powder and one that's often overlooked by reloaders. I use it in 9mm, 44 magnum, 45 Colt and 454 Casull with good results.

But for some reason, I just couldn't get it to perform in 45acp.

I've been using HS-6 for upper end loads of 9mm and 45acp with good results using gold dots and Hornady FMJ's. Standard primers seem to work fine also. Haven't tried with cast or plated as WST is my plinking powder of choice.
Recently tried HS-6 for some medium load 357 mags and found it very accurate and clean with LSWC's. Might have been the reduced recoil from 2400 and #9. I have some 44 mag loaded with it also but haven't had a chance to try them yet.

HS 6 is a slow powder which works mo better in high pressure rounds like 9 mm and 40SW or even Magnums.

Faster powders like HP38 or in that range are usually preferred.

Would not be my choice for the 380 nor the 45 ACP.

But these days, if there is data for it, use what you can get.:)

Tnx for the feedback. I was going to order the HS-6 from Powdervalley, but they have run out of stock. Maybe a good thing since two of the three options I was possibly going to try were not the best powder choice......

If you can find HP38/Win231, Unique, even Bullseye. Or Accurate brands #2, #5)around the same burn rate found on this chart. Those would be my choice for your calibers (and just about any others other than full magnum). But these days you have to be lucky and fast!!

Any stores around you that may sell reloading powder?

Like now, HS-6 was often available during the 2009-2010 powder shortage. So, I used that powder for about a year in .45 ACP. I had to keep charge weights at the upper end of the range, which was a pretty small range anyway. And, I had to apply a bit more crimp than normal. It did work OK once I figured it out.

I have loaded HS-6 in .32 H&R mag with 115 gr cast bullets, a med-heavy crimp, & standard pistol primers with good results in my marlin rifle. Haven't tried them in my ruger single six gun yet, but I think they should be a good round there too....
