1971 vintage Remington Model 788 .308 caliber with Nichols 4x scope - tack driving sunuvagun! Whitetails don't stand a chance! Especially the way I used to hunt, bringin' them in close with scents and rattlin' antlers....I need to get back to that that fun activity!

Back in my cowboy action shooting days I used my Navy Arms/Rossi M92 in .45 Colt to take a small deer but I don't have a picture of that rifle.

I've never killed anything with a centerfire rifle. All my deer hunting was with shotguns and buckshot. I owed a couple of CF's over the years, but never kept them long. Just no "need" for them, since they weren't legal where I hunted. So that left me using 22 RF for all my rifle hunting.

I don't hunt anymore, and have gotten rid of most of the 22's I've owned, but still have this one, a Ruger 10/22 "Wally-World Special "just in case."

Ruger22.jpg

That's a 4X Bushnell "blister pack" scope, from Wally-World of course, on it, and it's got a $5.00 nylon sling from Wally-World. It's had a trigger job done, not from Wally-World, and is a pretty good little shooter, at least the last time I used it it was.

M1903A3 sporterized by a German gunsmith sometime in the 1950s. Used at home when I just go up to sit quietly in the woods behind the house in the evening, and I tell myself I'm deer hunting. I'm a sucker for pretty wood. .30-06, of course.

The Sempert-Kriegfhof drilling (16x16/8x57R) is used here in Maine where bird and deer seasons overlap. My springer spaniel, Rigby, doesn't want to get left at home during deer season. My spouse can't stand the whining if I leave with a gun and he's left behind, so the drilling helps, and deer and ruffed grouse tremble.

The Ruger 77/RSI in .308 is my "at home" deer rifle when I sneak away without Rigby, and the Liberty Model Ruger No.1B in 7mm RM is used when in the Rockies for elk or mulies with my Wyoming-resident brother.

Rigby, is essential equipment and my nearly constant companion. Picture taken on the Bear Tooth Highway on the Wyoming-Montana border at 11,200 feet. I was short of breath, he wasn't.

77/RSI in 308 is a bucket list rifle for me. I love the caliber and I love mannlicher stocks. Problem is they're to darn pretty to take in the woods.

Here's some vintage, modern and custom hunting rifles. I enjoy hunting with almost every one of these rifles, especially the vintage ones. Perhaps I'll start a hunting thread later.

Winchester pre war Model 71 Deluxe 348 Win, Winchester pre 64 M70 fwt 30-06, Winchester pre 64 M70 270.

Winchester pre 64 30-06. My Grandfather's rifle given to me by my oldest uncle. I'm having it restored by my friend and old time master gunsmith Dennis Olson from Plains, MT. Dennis personally knew both Elmer Keith and Jack O'Connor and he's one of the last great old time custom rifle makers. He's rebluing and making a super grade stock for it to replace the 60's vintage Herter's aftermarket stock.

Knight Bighorn 50 cal in-line. Got it specifically for a muzzleloader elk hunt in Oregon but didn't draw. I can use it here in OK for their muzzleloader season now. I sold and gave away my other traditional hawken style muzzleloaders.

BrendonJames, your grandfathers Winchester looks to have some beautiful wood. We'll need some after pics when restoration is done.

Absolutely! Back in 1968 I believe, my Grandfather sent his pre 64 M70 which he bought new in 1952, to Herter's to have it re stocked with an aftermarket Herter's Monte Carlo stock. He didn't like the straight comb original Winchester stock for offhand shooting. Unfortunately, the original stock has been lost long ago. I'm having it restored to how it was originally, except upgrading to a super grade stock. He killed this eastern Oregon 4x4 mule deer buck with this same 30-06 in the mid 50's. He had it mounted and hung over the fireplace for many years.

After years of deer hunting the Savage99 has proven to be my go to rifle in a .300 Savage cartridge :)

Here is my newest rifle for large game,

strawhat-albums-strawhat-ii-picture26017-2a05651d-a5a6-47da-89a5-3af6eef5aa3c.jpeg

A Winchester Model 1895, originally chambered for the .30-40 and currently chambered in 405 WCF.

I mostly use it as a 40-72 equivalent, more than enough for White Tailed Deer.

But, if I really feel like tackling some big stuff or test my stalking ability, I bring out this one,

strawhat-albums-strawhat-3-a-picture27261-img-3161-a.jpeg

This started as the barreled action from a Model 1866 Second Allin Conversion in 50-70.
