Just got done reading that the predictions are increasing for Hurricane Sandy (or what's left of it) to hit the mid-Atlantic/Northeast. Noted it could turn into one major Nor'easter...brining rain, high winds and heavy snow in some areas.

I am well prepared...so will just wait and see. My kids wondered about Halloween and I told them that on more than one occassion I walked through snow getting candy when I was a kid in Nebraska. I thought it was cool.
 
I am keeping a worried eye on it. We have lots of old growth trees in the state, storms like this make them fall over and take the power lines with them. It can take a week or more to get power back.

Last year at the same time this storm will be here we had a snow storm. I recall about 90% of the state went dark. We were out 7 or 8 days.

We have been lucky as non of our trees have come down, just some branches.

My generator is getting tired ( its a cheap junky china special) it burns oil and shuts down on low oil every ten hours or so. Its does have several hundred hours on. I think I will buy a new one today, a bit nicer.

This storm has a bigger problem in that it will be high tide, fall tide, full moon, no add in the storm surge and they are thinking it will be worse than the 1992 (3?) Nor'easter.

I am hoping it just blows out into the ocean...

This is one storm I am not concerned about for our area. It must be a whole different ballgame that far North to have to worry about Ice and snow. Here if we have no power we just sweat a lot, it's way different being cold.:eek:

Stock up NOW if you have not already and be safe!
 
I dont see the bid deal. Im in PA not far from the coast (Jersey shore is on about 60 miles away). Last Sept we had a hurricane and were without power for two days. Worst that happened was we were all kinda bored. Nothing to do.

I remember the snow and ice storms of 94 & 96 where everything was closed for weeks. You were lucky if you could get out of your street. Again nothing happened

I'm about 3 miles from the Jersey Shore and remember well last year when we got hit, so not taking any chances. Lots of old growth trees and above ground wires so it's may get interesting.
But I love weather so I can't wait......

Tom, I was at Costco in Brookfield the other day, they had a Generac XG7000E for $999. The unit is American made and the price is excellent.
The worst snowstorm we had last winter was in late Oct, looking like a repeat.
 
Well, if this ain't an excuse to get another revolver, I don't know what is!! :eek:

I hope the storm holds off long enough to allow me to get to this weekend's gun show.

What caliber should I consider, since it is still early in the storm year, I am thinking rimfire, maybe 4"?? :D

Our youngest son, who lives with us and is an Electrical Lineman,
is heading east tomorrow morning, to New York to dial it in better.

He said that they must expect a big one because
there are far more calls for storm work than the norm.

At least you can rest assured that crews will be heading your way, like those
from Michigan, so if you do get hit hard they will have extra crews ready to rock.

The last big storm our son worked was, Ike, down in Texas.
 
A friend of mine is a lineman here in Michigan, and gets sent out all over whenever a damaging storm hits.
I've seen the pictures of all the damage they have to repair, crazy.
 
Trust me, Sandy can kick up a fuss.

Well I can say to all the linemen from Michigan, THANK YOU!!

The storm before last thats who restrung the wires on my street!!

The last storm, was the Halloween snow storm, so many pole snapped that they ran out of them and had to wait a day until more arrived.
 
I don't believe the snow part of it. I guess opening day for smoke poles is gonna be a washout this year.
 
It's like the old joke. What's the difference between a hurricane and a divorce (pronounced deeevorce) in the deep south. Nothing, either way someone is losing their mobile home.
 
The latest news is it's gonna be a big"MESS" for a lot of people. (Their words) The Hurricane part expected to hit in the NY Jersey area but the long term problems of rain wind and sleet or snow inland expected to last for some time and cause a lot of damage.

Just grey and windy here today and more expected for tomorrow.

All the best to those up North.

After the July storm I got most of the trees surrounding me trimmed back. I've got the generator fueled with back up cans of gas (sta-bil going in tomorrow), the yard buttoned down, I'm picking up the weekly grocery order tomorrow and beer on the way home. Best of all I'm off til Tuesday night. I'm as set as I can be to shelter in place 8 miles in from the shore here in the peoples republic of new jersey.

The XP series is American made- Wisconsin. The XG and GP are not, if i remember correctly.
 
The bug-out bags, tools & special safety equip. have been
loaded into the truck and Ian, our son, is now heading east.

I'm sure that the "bug-out" process is/has been going on across a number of
states by those who will be coming to a utility pole, or bucket truck, near you.

Hopefully, for those in the path of Sandy, the storm ;), it won't be as bad as predicted.

If I recall it was PIKE Electric from NC who had trucks all over the place and saved our butts after several storms. In addition of course to our excellent crews but there was just too much.
 
I subscribe to an automated alert system from my county's Emergency Operations Center. Here's the text of the phone call and e-mail I got a little while ago:

"Good Morning, this is Emergency Manager Rick Ayers with a hurricane warning message. I want to emphasize the potential for a very dangerous situation for Harford County. The main impact for our county will be Sunday night through Tuesday, when we could have sustained Tropical Storm Force Winds and Hurricane Gusts of 80 MPH. The potential for major flooding along the coast and inland is also a concern, with rain amounts expected between 6 and 12" and higher in some areas. The possibility of a major storm surge along the Chesapeake Bay will occur if the hurricane makes landfall near mouth of the bay and a storm surge of 4 to 8' is possible. The County EOC (Emergency Operations Center) is activating today to make necessary decisions for the safety of our citizens. However, at this time you the citizen need to be pro-active. Make sure you have your cell phones entered into our Emergency Notification System, by going to our website Harford County Maryland - Emergency Operations Center and click "sign-up now" or call 410-638-4900. Make sure that you have a 3-day supply of water and canned foods for your family, have a battery operated radio and extra batteries. Although we will have shelters available, if you live in an area prone to flooding, please consider a plan to relocate to a safe area. Overhyped... While I remember Isabel (that did some damage to my property), I can remember what they said about Irene last year. "Gloom and doom" stories make for better ratings, so that's what you hear on the TV and radio. Heavy rain and some blustery winds is what I'm thinking, here where I live.

Overhyped?....Why of course it is but you have to concede the it's a large storm that covers many states each with it's own unique problems ie:barrier islands, low lying coastals,flood plains etc. Add to that the fervor that the weather men/women display during times like this and overhyped is an understatement. But I lived through several devastating hurricanes living in the Caribbean and wished someone would have overhyped those events so that I and my neighbors could have at least have the choice to heed or ignore it as "overhyped".

As of the noon newcasts are saying we're going to get a "major wind event" with winds even stronger than Hurricane Irene. We had several trees blown down in my neighborhood with a huge oak falling on my neighbor's home across the street. It took a crane to get it off the roof. I just hope it keeps petering out and goes out to sea. Power outages ain't fun. You can't get on this forum if your 'puter don't work.
