I have resisted the 40 cal craze for years. The 9mm was fine with the right ammo, and the 45 ACP was fine with the right clothes. With the abundance of 40 ammo around, and some convincing by a MStrooper friend I bought a 40 cal, since it was a great price. Figured it would live in its case and Id shoot it at the range. WELL...........

I shoot some at the range, did a qualification, and have been convinced............fine I'll say it!!!!!!!!!! I LIKE THE 40 CAL!!!!

I hope you can all forgive me for my stubborn-ness. With my new Don Hume pancake OWB this could be my CCW caliber.

I agree with you, I resisted for a long time also, was satisfied with the 9's and .45's. Then I decided to find out myself about the .40 and bought a 4013TSW, I was impressed and surprised on the minimal differences, then came a modified 4006 that is one of the sweetest shooters I own.

I have been avoiding a 40 because I hate standing next to one at the range. It is just ear piercing to me. There are some great deals around on 3rd Gen 40's though. Is the noise as bad when you are shooting a 40? I just recently got into 9mm's with a 6946 and have a 908 on the way. 45 ACP is still my favorite though.

I have recently acquired a 5906, 4566, 1006, and a 4006. For some reason I just can't warm up to the 4006. It is decidedly less accurate than the 5906, though the two guns are nearly identical except for caliber. I like the 1006 a lot, so recoil ain't the issue.
Maybe I just need to shoot the 4006 some more.

I just sold this past Friday a Glock G23. I've never liked the "snappiness" and it's the only pistol I've ever owned that put a blister on my trigger finger. This is the second one I've tried. I'm not wearing gloves or putting a band aid on my trigger finger to shoot any pistol so, it's history. Even after replacing the grooved trigger with one from the G22 it still bothered me. I think it's mostly from the "safety lever" but other calibers like the 9mm or 45 don't do this so...it's gone.

This is the exact reason I sold my 23. I love the .40 round. I have a SW99, 4003 TSW (2), Beretta 96, Steyr M40, 4053 and a 4006 on the way. I also had the same experience with my first 4006. I couldn't shoot it as well as my other 40's, but maybe I needed to practice with it more. Not getting rid of my .45's either. I have been unloading my 9's. I only have three left. 5906 (original owner), P1/38 (I can shoot ragged holes all day long) and a mid-70's Hi Power. Since those are my best shooting nine's, I prolly won't be getting rid of them.

What kind of a 40 did you get? I have the Sig P229 and, I love it. I recently bought a .357 Sig barrel fo it and most guys that have both like the .357 sig better but, as for me i'll stick to the .40 for my EDC; at least until the ammo. for .357 sig becomes more available and a little cheaper.

I carried a Glock 22 for 3 years as a govt. contract armed guard at a nuclear plant, I fired probably about 1,000 rounds through it for training and qualifications.......I liked the gun and the round, it was accurate enough to make me look good on several occasions and when I was by myself in the creepy back part of the plant property we had to patrol in a vehicle, where poachers and other "odd" people who liked to throw things at security vehicles, the .40 gave me enough confidence that I could handle myself if I encountered a real threat...for protection and raw firepower it was a slight improvement over the S&W Model 10's previously issued..... but when I bought my own Glock I went with a 17 just because it was the "standard Glock" and I like 9mm more as an all purpose round. If I saw a good deal on a PD trade in 22 I can't say I wouldn't consider it though. I am a revolver guy though, so I don't give auto cartridges a whole lot of thought these days.

For most "issue" purposes I think the 9mm is adequate, I have seen 90 lb. females who couldn't handle the recoil of the .40 and in cases such as LEO and security, where MANY Glocks are used this is a consideration. If LEO's have a choice between 9mm, .40 or .45 for personally owned weapons they can carry on duty than the .40 would be a fine choice.

I traded, kind of on a whim, for a M&P in .40. Had never owned .40 and had never owned a poly gun. I really like both. The M&P is a great fitting pistol and I like shooting the .40. Some claim its "snappy" but I find no significant difference between it and .45, my favorite caliber to shoot. And ammo is seemingly everywhere. Even during the shortage a while back, I could find it pretty steadily at WM.

The .40 is something I've tried and found wanting. Accuracy is mediocre compared to 9x19 or .45ACP in comparable pistols and 9x19 is the most inherently feed-reliable of the common service pistol cartridges. You can also build a smaller gun (like the 3913) around 9x19 before reliability and/or shootability become compromised. The 4006 is a nice enough pistol, but it doesn't do anything a 5906 won't and I'd rather have the extra rounds for the same size and weight.

The G17 and G19 are admirably reliable, but the three G23s I've tried have had occasional issues and are far less resistant to limp-wrist induced malfunctions that the 9x19 chambered Glocks.

In short, I'm not willing to give up ANY reliability for a largely illusory caliber 'advantage'. But, that's just my opinion...

My personal verdict, for now I am happy with my autoloaders in 9x19.

.40 is a decent defensive round, if I ever get back into bottomfeeders I might get a Gen 1 or 2 trade in Glock 22.

I would hope the M&P in .40 is a good gun, after all Smith developed the .40 S&W! It would look pretty bad if a Smith auto in a Smith round crapped the bed

I am more attracted to those hard to find Smith 610's, they are 10mm but will also shoot .40.

I like the .40 S&W also. I would love to have a medium frame moon-clipped revolver chambered in it. I have been on the lookout for a 4046 to go with my 5946, but cant seem to find one in my price range.

The .40

I got into the .40 right after it showed up, and was NOT impressed! My first was a Glock 23 and while it was reliable and shot accurately enough for defensive purposes, it did tend to pinch my trigger finger so I traded it on a SIG 226 ( which is what I was carrying in the Navy at the time) and never looked back.
I've had 4006s, and other Glock 40s but never kept them. For me the nine with modern HP ammo is just fine!
As for the .45, it's my preferred weapon!
Also, I read somewhere that a lot of PDs are trading their 40s in on .45s lately! It's about time that the police got some serious hardware.
