The state "boys" were having a practice match (NRA PPC and Service Gun) today in preparation for attending NM for the nationals.
cant go
too expensive and no dept help.
anyway, I go to the practice matches to pratice as I am just starting and learning.
I was shooting a new to me STI TargetMaster 6" 9mil PPC auto and I bought me (dont laugh) a cheapo Walmart velcro band watch to gauge my time in the longer stages. $9.50 plus tax.
I was at the 50 (match 3 which is 2 min 45 sec for 24 rounds) and hit my timer as the target turned. As I finished my first 18 rounds, I glanced at my watch and realized it was at the 2 min mark....so I said to myself...."take your time and get good shots you got 45 seconds for 6 shots"
I recall taking a big breath, then I took a slow aim and squeezed off a round, recovered and began to squeeze again and then the targets turned away. WHAT!!!!!!!
I thought it was a target failure and I looked at my watch and it was STILL STOPPED AT THE 2 MINUTE MARK! )(*&%%&^)(
apparently the exposed stopwatch buttons (no fencing or anything built around the buttons) was depressed by me at some point during the stage. URGGHHHH!
my goal was to shoot at least a 1450 and ended up with a 1394. this was a killer mentally eating anywhere from 35 to 50 points and then it affected my shooting the rest of this particular match with this gun.
on a side note, the sun was at my left and dummy me did not think to make a cardboard side sun guard for my glasses until I was headed home. another DOH!
almost another failure...but a fluke mishap where the shooter to my left, his empties were being chunked at me and one actually bounced off my slide near the ejection port during recoil.
during one of the stages....my scorer said I had one too many rounds on the target. I could not argue but I know I only load six, six ..... and I double check prior to inserting into my mag pouches. I could not blame the 9mil shooter to my left as he had a big hole in his target, but I had no evidence to prove I did not shoot 7. another URGGGHHHHH! and they took an X away from me. theres another 10 points.
I did have a couple of minor malfunctions with the STI
I loaded for the 50 yd line...
124XTP/5.0 WSF/1.140" COAL which is a little long.
I had three failure to feeds which were all overcome by a bump of the mag at the prone position at the 50. I shoot left hand prone because I is left eye dominant and my large stature keeps me from shooting right hand accurately in the prone. I felt my grip was a little soft after the third failure, so I tighten up and no more malfunctions of that nature. I probably need to bump up on the WSF for more slide action with the heavier/beefier STI 6" slide.
I was also experiencing erratic ejection. Most of the ejection was off to the right but I was have a few empties land back in the ejection port, but only when the slide locked back on empty.
I did take note when I detailed stripped that the extractor does slightly (clocking) move but was very difficult to remove from the slide. I left as is based on the previous owner saying the gun ran reliable. it probably just needs tuning/adjusting.
I almost made my goal of 1450 with the revolver shooting a 1445 with plenty of mistakes and most of my shots drifting left into the 9s at the first 50. Some of the more experienced shooters were also complaining the sun was affecting their sight pic and one shooter told me that I needed to sight my gun in for this range.
My guess for next year at the 50, gonna go 3-4 clicks right. I actually held a little right at the second 50 with the revolver and ended up shooting high into the 9s. I should have just adjusted my windage on the sight instead of doing Kentucky.
oh well...still learning and had fun.
