I beg your help

I have a question about a gun my buddy has. I know it's not a S&W, but the folks here are the most knowledgeable group I know.

What he has is an Iver Johnson, given to him by his Grandfather before he passed. Here's some pics of what he's got.

Iver Johnson Second Model 6469 Safety Hammerless. 32 S&W (Black Powder). 1904-1908. At least that's what I come up with using Google.

Not worth much except maybe the sentimental value. Maybe the only revolver with a trigger safety.

According to Goforth's book on Iver Johnsons. the gun is a 1st Model .38 hammerless, (1894-1895). It's the only model with the safety trigger carried over from the earlier "Swift" model and a serial number without a letter code preceding the digits. Value is nominal in it's current condition. Around here those are what are known as permit getters. Once you have your permit you buy a gun like that to throw on it just so you can keep your permit until you get something better. The value usually is about $100 or so in working condition. Smith & Wesson made thousands upon thousands of their little break opens, and your gun is one of the thousands upon thousands of the copies everyone else made. Iver Johnson, US Arms, H & R and many others copied the Smith design, and most I see out there don't work for some reason or another. A friend of mine has a US Arms version of the gun you have, and the value on his was $75

It will be in caliber 32 S&W (short) or 38 S&W. As someone said; black powder only: it probably won't blow up with smokeless but the frame and locking will stretch and it will get pretty loose pretty fast. The whole serial number, with letter prefix, if any, is on the left side of the grip frame, visible when the left grip is removed. Be careful; that hard rubber is pretty brittle by now.
