I Caught A Gun Thief

I attended a gun show a couple of weeks ago. My buddy was looking for a new skinning knife for deer season. The knife tables were at the end of a row with a four foot aisle between them and a gun table. I walked to the gun table and saw a young lady looking at a shotgun on the corner of the table. We looked at each other and I asked her if she was going to buy the shotgun. She smiled and said no. As she walked away, I looked at the shotgun. It was on the corner of the table. There was a man and woman running the gun table. I then went back to where my buddy was haggling over a knife. My buddy told the dealer he would think about the deal and we walked around the show for a little while and returned to the knife table for another round of haggling. I began walking along the knife tables toward the gun table with the shotgun. A woman ran past me heading for the exit. I watched her running toward the exit and realized it was the woman from the gun table. As I turned back toward the gun table, I locked eyes with a man standing at the knife table. He was looking right at me and then looked way quickly. I then looked at the gun table and saw the shotgun was missing but the box was still on the table. I looked back at the man at the knife table and then looked down and saw him holding a long gun tight to his body partially covered by his coat. I looked back at him and he was looking at me. He then turned away from me and tried to cover the gun. I realized it was the shotgun I had looked at earlier. He must have taken the shotgun and then just turned in the aisle to make it look like he had been standing there the whole time. I walked past him to the man at the gun table. I told the dealer at the table what I saw and he followed me back to the man. The gun dealer saw the shotgun and grabbed the thief. Security held him until the police arrived. He was arrested. I wrote out a statement and it looks like I will be called as a witness if the case goes forward. I was glad I could help that dealer.

Let them try that stupidity here. Twin doors on one side of the gun show hall are for those to come in and out--plus having from three to five LEO types stationed there is a great determent. Also, many of the sellers are LEOs--so I dont think many will try being stupid at shows here--but--since its in Robstown--I might be wrong.

Something about people working in concert really tees me off. I guess instead of just a grab and run they try to distract people. I had a relative that worked in a shoe store and people would come in and shop for the shoes they wanted, then about an hour later a group would come in and everybody would disperse all over the store, calling for sales help. When the employee was distracted, the shoes went out of the door and of course all the people running interference are as innocent as babies. This happened frequently because the owners didn't care enough to try to stop it. Easy pickin's.

PS: The last show I went to had a LOT of security guards.

I think they call that Mobbing???? I see that in the news an awful lot these days. This stuff is planned using social media too.

WELL DONE OP...

Yeah, you mob for me...

You mob for me and I'll mob for you.

Failed distraction experiment: Many, many years ago when I worked at a grocery store a group of younger people gathered and were were carrying on a big conversation at the front of the store while the main perp had a carton of cigarettes that he was waving around and making sure everybody would see. Then they all said see you later and dispersed and the guy tried to nonchalantly walk out with the cigarettes. The nice old lady that worked at the cash register said, "Are you going to pay for those cigarettes, sir?" and he back pedaled and said, "Yeah." After he left we had a good laugh. Crooks have gotten a lot more sophisticated now. That was back in the 70's when demonstrating how people could be deceived psychologically was all the rage.

Good job indeed! Sounds like you handled that situation just right. Hope they catch his buddies too, my money says he'll give them up at the drop of a hat. A low life is a low life any way you cut it.

when these "folks" are caught in the act.......forget about the trial, jury, judge, jail............put em right on the hard road chain gang supervised by sheriff Joe.....

Can't remember the name of the place but it's on the Missippi river in New Orleans not too far from where the U.S.S. Kidd is moored. Anyway, some guy stuck a mini 14 down one leg of his parachute pants and headed out the front door. He'd already been spotted and there was a good police presence waiting for him. As he's trying to drag the mini out of his pants the police are telling him not to. My buddy with whom I was with at the time had gone out to his truck. He got caught in the middle and jumped over the small railing to get out of the way of flying objects. All of the gun shows down here usually have signs about it being a felony conviction if you are caught steeling a firearm at a gun show. Frank
