I finally got around to deciding to get myself a couple of Model 28's, since that would round out my collection of N frame 357 guns. I wasn't looking to get pristine guns since I was doing this on a bit of a budget and I was looking for shooters instead of safe queens. To me, safe queen and Model 28 just don't go together. These guns were made to be working guns and not beauty queens. So, since there are no gun shops around here I know of that have vintage revolvers of the 60's or 70's, it was off to GB. I ended up watching several model 28's that met my criteria for decent shape and around a $600-650 price.

This 4" gun was my first buy. I picked it up yesterday evening from my FFL guy after 2 weeks at the rig and cleaned it up and changed the rebound slide spring to a 13 lb and the mainspring to a full power Wolff Power Rib while cleaning it up. I also had bought a set of Ahrends Retro Target grips before leaving for work for this gun as it came with Pachmayr "Gripper" finger grip rubbers, which I am not a fan of.

This one had a little bit of rust and some very minor pitting on the side plate, but hasn't been shot too much. It also had someone at one time polish off the case hardening colors off the sides of the trigger and hammer, but it has a nice single and double action pull, especially with the Wolff springs installed. The serial number on this one is S317xxx, which I figure should have shipped around 1969 or so. All in all, it looks like it will make a nice shooter grade gun.

The very next day, there was a 6" barrel gun I was watching and nobody had bid on it at 10 minutes before the auction was to end, so I went and bid the minimum and won it. From the auction pics, it looked like it hadn't been shot much, if at all and it came with the original Magna grips serialed to the gun, plus a set of some unknown to me targets. I also picked it up last night and brought it home and cleaned it up. It had a trigger shoe installed, which I promptly removed. Examining the gun, it has only had at most a cylinder or 2 of ammo shot through it and is in excellent shape. When I opened it up, there was very little gunk or powder fouling inside supporting this conclusion too. I also installed a 13 lb rebound slide spring and a Wolff Power Rib full strength mainspring before buttoning it up and gave it a good coat of Ren wax and installed the no name targets. Here is how it sits.

BTW, does anyone know what those target grips look like? The trigger on this one feels good with the Wolff springs, but it also feels like a new gun that hasn't had the trigger pulled on it many times. I am thinking that the trigger on it will break in real nice as I run some rounds down the pipe. The serial number on this one is an earlier N number, N55xxx. I figure this ship date is probably 1970-1971.

Now, if the weather lets, tomorrow I will be off to the range to give them both a workout! :D:D:D

That's a great "welcome home" Mudd!! Those two look sharp. Fun shooting 357s with no ouch factor like a K/L frame. I took my 4"er to the range along with a 2 1/2" 19 & 686 since they haven't been out in awhile. The HP was the most enjoyable and got way more rounds thru it. I hope you get to test drive em tomorrow. Congrats!

Trout, that is exactly what I was asking; thanks for telling me who made them. They feel good just holding it in hand, but I haven't gotten to the range with it yet.

75Vette, I know I will like them at the range, since I own a 4" 27-2 and a 6" 27-2 also. But those guns are just too purty to put a lot of rounds through. I'm really kind of digging the workmanlike looks of these model 28's; all business and no fancy stuff. :D

Ive become flat sold on 28's.... Im like you I shoot my pistols... I have 2.. 4 and 6 Inch...without question the 4 inch clears a holster quicker, and I just like the looks of the 4 inch. It served Police units for 18+ years.... flat out best overall revolver I own.

You did real well there Mud. The 28 is one of my favorite .357s. And like you said, all business and no frills. I hope those 2 shoot as nice as they look.

I just dug out my Timney trigger gauge and it confirmed how sweet the triggers are on these 28's. Both had a single action let off of right on 2 lbs and the double action trigger on both is in the 10 1/2-11 lb range. I can't wait to give them a run tomorrow. :D

Outstanding examples. And you got the six inch too! Not bad on a budget. Those are my kind of "shooters".

Why did you chose to replace the mainspring with a full power rib ms instead of a reduced power rib ms?
Just curious.

Looks like you got a nice one, CH4. That is the exact Pachs that came on my 4" too, that I replaced with the Ahrends retro targets.

I use the full power mainspring because I know I won't have any problems with primer hits with them. And the Power Rib springs have an indentation in the middle of the spring where the tension screw contacts them, so it makes for a slightly lighter spring tension anyways. It's not really an indentation, but rather the way the rib is built into the spring that makes for a deeper contact with the tension screw.

Congratulations. I have had several 28-2s over the last couple of years. I keep finding them really cheap ($400-$500 range) and people keep wanting to buy them from me. Well I'm done with that. This time I picked up a 28 no dash with a beautiful set of replica "Coke" Target stocks on it from a fellow member right here on the forum. And ain't no one getting this one off of me.

That's awesome!!!!!! I only have one 28. A 1978 6" 28-2.

I let a friend take a 4" Highway Patrolman (pre-28) from our collection. I really wanted it bad but he's a good friend and ex-LE. He told me "its his kind of gun" and I think he's right.

So I took the 3 1/2" pre-27 instead.

These are the stocks that originally came on mine. When the time is right I'll start looking for some nice S&W target stocks.

It has sported Pachmyars since right after my brother first purchased it.

Mud, Those are a couple nice examples! The 28-2 was my first handgun in 1968. I have 3 now, and am buying another 6" for my son. I think they remain the best deal out there right now, but they are creeping up, as equal condition 27's go nuts. Enjoy them!!!!

Has anyone seen or possessed a 28 (or any Smith) with incomplete backstrap serrations - where the middle isn't cut?
