I frame grips

Those do not look like orig. I frame grips. Looks like someone shortened a set of J's..........too much checkering between the bottom of the diamond and the checkering groove.
Look at JcMack's picture above

I agree, plus the serial number is not in any of the serial # ranges for Baby J frame Chief's Special's I frame size grips, 22/32 and 32 I frames or 38 S&W I frames. Definitely shortened J frame grips.

But, at the right price they'll work for someone until proper I frame grips can be found or on a non-collectable quality gun.

Are you sure about I's being shorter?

Gentlemen,

I recently acquired a mid-fifties .32 hand ejector, presumably an Improved I-frame gun. The original grips were nice, but I wanted rubber ones for daily carry, so I ordered a pair of Hogue J-frame Bantams. I figured I could trim the excess.

To my surprise, they fit perfectly.

Are I-frames really shorter than J's, or do I have a weird revolver?

I frames are shorter. You must have a 2nd improvement Model of 1953 32 I frame with the larger, egg shaped trigger guard and longer grip which are the same size as J frames.

another thing to look for in the i frame grips is that the checker border has a pronounced curve in the bottom and top border

Hey Hondo, I'm beginning to wonder whether we ought to start calling them "I-frame 1st Improvement" and "I-frame 2nd Improvement" to distinguish the Model of 1953 version. I know it would not agree with the S&W model designations of the time, but it sure would help straighten out some of this confusion.

Whadayathink?

I think you're right. Post war Transitional I frame and Model 1953 I frame (since it's an actual new model), may be less confusing albeit a mouthful. It would cover all the post war I frames lest someone wonder if the unimproved I frames are different yet.
