You may remember I posted a few weeks ago that a friend was liquidating a large collection of long guns, over 70 of them, and he gave me first crack at a M48 Yugoslavian Mauser in .308 caliber. This was a like new rifle, originally chambered and marked on the reciever ".308". He let me shoot it, I liked it and wanted it, down side was the rifle had been drilled and tapped for a Lyman reciever sight, affecting the value....

He hemmed and hawed for over a month before setting a price, not too high but what I thought was $100 or so too high considering the holes drilled, he settled the deal by wrapping me up a nice package, the .308 Mauser, a nice M24 8MM Yugo Mauser (with straight bolt) and a plethora of ammuniton, casting and reloading supplies.

M24 8MM Mauser. Bore is like new, shoots good and likes cast lead bullets:

The reloading goodies included a set of RCBS 8MM dies, a Lee 175 grain 8MM bullet mold, 1000 8mm gas checks for casting lead bullets, 200 new 8MM cases and 350 rounds of surplus 8MM ammo. The ammo is Ecuadoran, Egyptian and Israeli, the Israeli ammo has a 1955 head stamp, so that's pretty interesting. I've already hand loaded and shot up 50 jacketed rounds, and 50 mildly loaded cast lead bullets. The M24 shoots good, accurately and to point of aim. I'm a happy camper...

Best part, he's still got tonnage of rifles and reloading stuff to unload! When my wallet has recovered from this deal, I'll take another look at helping him reduce his burden.

Then Yugo M48 in .308 is interesting as somebody went to the trouble of using the correct profile barrel so you could refit the original sights. Who did all that work?

Is the M24 actually a 24/47? If so, which shop did the rebuild, Preduzece 44 (AKA ZAVOD 44) or one of the Radionitsa shops.

LV Steve,

I'll have to check those rifles this afternoon, I'm on my way to a rifle match this morning, but I'll check the markings on the rifle and post more info....

LV Steve,

The M24 8MM is marked "M24/47" , some undecipherable arsenal marking "NPEAY3EHE 44" with a Yugo crest and serial number. This rifle appears to have a fresh barrel, rifling is clean and sharp at the muzzle.

The M48A .308 Mauser has a Yugo crest, has a proof mark? of "BKI HP.J" and the same undecipehperable arsenal mark "NPEA3EHE 44". This rifle has what appears to be a target barrel, with recessed crown, blueing of the barrel matches the reciever. This one may have been made for the export market, as it is marked ".308" on the bridge of the reciever, vice "7.62"....

Both rifles shoot great with jacketed and cast lead bullets. They shoot to point of aim at 50 and 100 yards, not high like a lot of surplus rifles. Did I mention that I'm a happy camper?

I have not shot the 8Mm rifle with the surplus ammo, and probably will not as I know all of the surplus 8MM is corrosive. As long as I can keep them fed with handloads, I'll avoid the surplus stuff....

There are a lot of 24/47s out there with pristine barrels. I bought a complete action and put it in a spare stock and it had a mint bore. The "undecipherable arsenal mark" will be the Cyrillic version of Preduzece 44, sometimes transliterated as Preduzeche 44. It is the most common factory mark from Yugoslavia

That .308 gun is a very unusual piece. Enjoy them both.

Canoe, don't worry about shooting corrosive ammo. When you get done shooting and clean it, just spray some Windex down the barrel, let it soak for a couple of minutes, then clean normally.
