Apologies to those who are tired of licquor threads.;)
I've been looking for something to sip in the evenings along with a decent cigar. I've found that there's very little that I like.
After reading the bourbon thread I tried 3 of the more expensive brands. I have given away two bottles, the Makers Mark is still here, one shot short of a full bottle. Most tasted like they had just a dash too much lighter fluid.
I learned that I can't stand vodka. Gin is tolerable only in a martini. Thumbs down on most wines too. Then I remembered that back in my Army days most of the guys, including me, were divided between Seagrams 7 and Crown Royal. So I bought a bottle of Seagrams and bingo!....something that I actually enjoy.
I've never heard anybody here mention Seagrams, so I guess I have bad taste?

The Romans used to say, "De gustibus non disputandum est." I have tried to convince people that it means either "Arguments disgust me" or "Don't spit on your goose," but it doesn't. It actually simply states the obvious about taste: that it is not something to be argued about. You like what you like. And you can do about it whatever you want.

I am fortunate in that (because of this web site) I tried Evan Williams, and found that I like it better than JD. Evan Williams is one of the least expensive bourbons around, but seems to me, so far, to be either one of the best, or simply the best. I also enjoy the reverse snobbery of drinking inexpensive whiskey, just as I enjoy shooting well with my $50 C*** Match Target Woodsman, which I rescued from being sent to Numrich for parts. [Although, truthfully, my C*** Challenger is a slightly better gun, and the Model 41 I used to own was even better , yet.]

Enjoy whatever you enjoy.

Dear sir,

I IMPLORE you... PLEASE get thyself to the liquor store and procure a bottle of Eagle Rare bourbon. If you don't someone will see you drinking that Segrams.

Isn't "7" and "Crown" the same except for age and of course price?

And wasn't there a middle sister named "V.O."?

Please correct me if I'm wrong as someone told me that whilst drinkin
many moons ago.

D.G.

Why do y'all ** out letters in COLT??

It's not a profane word, though it is shocking to some amongst us. :D

My favorite end of the day drink is port. My favorite is Smith Woodhouse Colheita 1986 port.

While I don't enjoy the cigar, I do enjoy the texture and flavors that port embodies. At around $50.00 a bottle it is a little pricey but well worth it.

Lee,
On the Nikon site I visit we commonly star-out the Canon brand, or mis-spell it as Cannon etc. It's all in fun and most of us respect the other brand. I suspect that's what is happening here.

Actually, Lee, it just sorta pains me to type the "ol" part. I can almost read the word without getting nausea, but typing it is just out of the question. I think that is the feeling of many of those here, and nobody wants to offend by actually typing the word out.

Because, it says in the rules to only use things in good taste, and horse meat doesn't taste good.

Horses are illegal to slaughter for eating in this country anyway, Lee. :p
We's been po' up here in the mountains, but never that po'!
Thought about eat'n the mule once though...just because he was so darn stubborn.

I guess we could use the old standby:
Hartford-horsey logo off-brand piece.

:D

Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming:

RonJ,

Have you ever tried any Geo. Dickel white label or barrel select? Good stuff if I do say so- from my perspective.

If you don't like brother Dickel's distill'n, save it for the off chance that you might have to eat a mule.
Might even cover the taste. ;)

Excellent hand-made, small-batch, Appalachian hardwood charcoal-mellowed local product. PM me for prices and directions. ;)

It's an ice cold glass of Turi (Estonian Vodka) and a good Criollo for me when I want to wind down. They complement eachother pretty well and go even better when there's a cute Russian gal waiting for you to finish and come back inside.

Sorry. I thought that it was clear, particularly in a post about taste. I simply didn't want to upset anyone when he or she might be drinking.

Ron, I do have a 6" Colt Challenger that I bought in the late 80's for $200 used. I'm not sure, but it may have been made around the time that a bunch were made for USMC to use in competition. It was (and is) a perfectly good gun for bullseye shooting, if you are satisfied (as I am) with iron sights. It can even be carried quite easily concealed, although not, in my opinion, as a defensive weapon. It would probably be one of my last guns to go.

Thanks. I've never heard of a Colt Challenger and figured you'd had a slight brain fart when refering to a Browning Challenger. My mistake. :o

+1 It can get expensive but there is no end to wonderful ports. And they also go quite weil with good dark choclate.

To me, a cigar is nothing more than a controlled trash fire. If you enjoy it, good on ya.
Ah - bourbons and whiskey blends and trying different varieties is a wonderful past-time.

On a friends recommendation, I tried a small-batch Canadian blend called 'Forty Creek'. All but impossible to find here in NC (we have gov't- run liquor stores) Found mine while on vacation on Fla. It is smooth, slightly 'caramel-y', slightly 'oak-y' with a little smoke. A super-smooth finish. I made my 1/2 gal. last almost a year. It was wondeful, and not too expensive.

Other than that, my regular is 1. Wild Turkey 2. Evan Williams 3. Makers Mark.

As was noted you can't really argue "taste" anymore than you can argue religion (it comes down to faith, either you believe or you don't). I don't drink much liquor but when the urge strikes I reach for a little Crown Royal on the rocks, as it goes down very smooooth.

When my 19 year old nephew and his buddy came for a visit I told them they could drink what they liked while staying in our home. Here comes the scary/disgusting part... They went to the kitchen and fixed the following:

Large glass, three fingers of Crown Royal, fill to the top with...(I can hardly type this)....warm Dr. Pepper, no ice! They each had one of these almost every night after dinner. If I had no seen it I wouldn't believe it. Oh, the humanity!!!

That just sent shivers down my spine. Every so often a waitress will screw up bring me a Scotch & 7-up instead of Scotch & Soda-I tell you that first sip definately crosses your eyes  (down here when you say soda water they think you mean coke or 7 up-as in "gimme a sodawada" :rolleyes" you have to say club soda-not soda water, not soda. But once you get the local dialect down you're good to go

A good sipping rum to go along with a cigar: Flor de Cana: Centenario. There are three Centenarios from Flor de Cana ranging from 12 to 18 years aged. These deeply aged rums are intended to be served neat or on the rocks. The 15 year old Flor de Cana Centenario is probably perfect evening stogie compliment: carmel-like and moderately sweet, it has an almost tobacco-like toasty flavor...

havana club dark with a partagas SD4 or partagas torpedo. either cigar at least 4yrs. old and properly stored.

I enjoy a wee nip of Irish whiskey from time to time and usually what I consider the better stuff such as Jameson or Bushmills. I have a brother who is Scotch aficionado and we once decided to try a brand called Laphroaig - wow.

Those familiar with the Isley scotches will know and appreciate new meaning to harsh, earthy-tasting, peat smoked whisky. If I had to describe the taste, it would be freshly dug, moist soil and camp fire smoke. I still have the bottle which is now a little less than half full. Every once in a great while when I feel up to the challenge, I pour myself a little bit over ice (trust me, it needs it) and soon remember why it continues to languish in the liquor cabinet.

For me, it's whiskey with an "e" - bourbons are too sweet and I've often found taste too much like Flintstones vitamins.
