A friend of mine just was given some nice toys by his uncle. One of these was a very nice 1871 Smith and Wesson Schofield (sp?) chambered in .44 Russian. it is nickle with either ivory or bone grips. The only down side is one of the extractors is broken. The barrel on this beauty was about six inches in length.

Schofields were only produced in .45 S&W (think short .45 Colt with a slightly larger diameter rim), so what your friend has is probably one of the various Model Three revolvers. The latch on the Scofield was on the frame, while the other break-tops had the latch on the barrel.

Can you post a picture and the markings and serial number?
