I went to the local Cabellas yesterday and saw that the have a couple versions of the Shield Plus. One was the plain jane version with a set of ear muffs and a range bag. Standard sights came on this gun too. That was $499. The other was the one with the optics ready slide and night sights. This one was $549, no range bag or ear protection. I believe the one with night sights is interesting in that if you buy it and put an optic sight on then you probably would want to toss the standard night sights and upgrade to taller sight.

Not sure what to do but I do want to try out a Shield Plus.

Optic Ready is always the better choice.
If you decide to use optics later no needs to mill the slide and that will cost some money.
Ear muffs and bag are not super extras that would compensate high price for basic pistol.

I carry a 642 and agree with Old Cop's comment. However, given that choice, I'd still get the one with night sights. Can't hurt to have them, even if you never need them. And someday, maybe years from now, you'll want or need to put an optic on it. I'm answering how I would think given that choice, even though I have no desire for an optic sight myself.

It's only 50 bucks more for two things you don't care about right now, but won't do any harm to have them in case someday you do. That's assuming you don't need the range bag and hearing protection.

And if it turns out you don't like the gun, I suspect being optic sight ready will make the $549 one easier to sell.

For the small difference in price, the optics ready version is the better value. You can always pick up a set of muffs and a bag and as previously mentioned if you decide to sell it the optics ready version will most likely sell quicker.

My son has one

My son bought the shield plus. It's a little hard to shoot because of its size but shoots very well when the shooter does his part.
I'd go for the night sights, they are worth the extra money. He also has the 4" 2.0 which is his best shooting gun for him.

Thanks for the replies guys. I am mulling this over pretty hard today.

If I could order a Shield Plus exactly the way I would want it, I think I would get one with fiber optic/tritium sights and be done. I believe that would be the best set up for my needs.

I can't say anything about the Shield plus but Hickok 45 likes it and he is a Glock guy. I have the Shield 2.0 9mm that I carry for church security. If it is anything like my Shield you will like it.

I recently inherited a Shield 9. I guess it's a few years older having an 8 and 7 round mag. Shooting mostly J-Frames for the last few years, I didn't expect much from this little 9mm. Well, I was wrong. What a nice shooter. Easy to control and shoot accurately. Less recoil than my 442 Snub. This little puppy is definitely going to get some in the waistband carry with my 442 in a pocket.

If you have the extra $$, go for the pricier one. If you don't, then get the lesser. The Shield 45 is one of my favorite shooters and IMO is a good value as a carry pistol. Good luck with your decision!

Thanks for the input guys. I really like the 40 S&W round alot. I wish there was a shield plus in that caliber. Eleven or twelve round s of that with the new flat trigger would be even better as far as I am conserned.

As a former leo and firearms instructor I had shot tens of thousands round of 40 S&W. I believe that for the package size it delivers the goods. I wonder if I should just hold out for one of those and keep my fingers crossed.
