I have this old French auto loader from WWII

Your MAB would be a fitting sidearm for my MAT

We had a TV show here in the 1950's called, Capt.Gallant of the Foreign Legion. The title character, played by Buster Crabbe, was American.

His revolver seemed to me to be a S&W M&P, Victory Model or civilian. I realize now that it might have been one of those 8mm copies made in Spain for France. I think he sometimes carried a Mlle de Ordnance M-1892 (Lebel) 8mm. I don't recall the Mlle 1950 9mm or the 7.65mm Long pistols on that show.

The rifles were MAS-36's.

Anyone else recall that show? Most of the troops were real Legionnaires stationed in Morocco or in Algeria, where they filmed. I think the senior sergeants as well as the officers had handguns.

During the Algerian war in the beginning most side arms were pistol
Colt 1911 or Mac 50
The chasseurs alpins (alpenjagger) used Garant rifle
Thompson mg are often found for supplétif troop (harkis)
Carbines usm1 and some M2 for officer and Para regiments
The 92 revolver is not use in combat troops but by police, rural police soma administration like tresor
But after 60 all were equipped with Mas 49/56 rifle, Mat 49 mg, Mac 50 pistol
And AA52 mg

You are correct,
That Legionnaire was the head of police in Martinique Antilles françaises.
He was a veteran of numerous theatres of service.
Portrait painted by my first wife's father.

So, which gun did he carry?

Thanks. When were the 7.65MM Long pistols phased out?
M-35A and S.
